5 HP air compressors: the standard two stage shop compressor

5 HP is the most common industrial compressor size sold, and for good reason. A two stage 5 HP pump delivers 14 to 19 CFM at 175 PSI, enough to run one automotive bay flat out, a tire shop, a cabinet shop with two spray guns, or a farm shop with an impact wrench and a sand blaster in use at the same time. It runs on 230 volt single phase at roughly 22 to 28 amps, so it does not need three phase service, which is why it is the top of the range for most garages and small businesses.

Oil free scroll: Chicago Pneumatic COAIRE CSOF 5 HP in simplex, all in one and base mounted form, Quincy QOF 5 and Atlas Copco SF+ 4 at 13 to 14 CFM.

Single phase, pump type and tank size

Almost every 5 HP piston unit is available in 230 volt single phase and in 230 or 460 volt three phase. If you have single phase power, check the amp draw and plan a 40 amp circuit with a magnetic starter. A splash lubricated cast iron pump (Champion R, CP RCP-C, Mark IronAir, ABAC) is the normal choice; the Quincy QP is pressure lubricated for long pump life in shops that run eight hours a day. Vertical 80 gallon tanks take the least floor space. Pick a 120 gallon tank when the compressor feeds a long header or a blast cabinet that drains it quickly.

Dryer sizing

Match the dryer to the compressor output, 15 to 25 CFM for a 5 HP two stage, from the refrigerated air dryer collection. Paint and powder coating lines should add a coalescing filter after the dryer.
