7.5 HP air compressors: two bays, or one continuous duty rotary screw
A 7.5 HP two stage piston compressor delivers 22 to 26 CFM at 175 PSI, which handles two working automotive bays, a body shop with a DA sander running, or a fabrication shop with a plasma table and grinders. It is also the smallest size where a rotary screw becomes a mainstream choice: the 7.5 HP screws on this page make 26 to 41 CFM at 100 percent duty, so one of them can replace a 10 HP piston that was cycling constantly.
What is on this page
Two stage piston: Champion 7.5 HP RV Series (the largest single family here, 40 configurations), Champion R-Series simplex vertical, horizontal, base mounted and Airstation, Champion ADVANTAGE and VP Series, Chicago Pneumatic RCP-C Iron and the RCP quiet enclosed unit, Quincy QT Pro and QP pressure lubricated, Mark IronAir, Atlas Copco CR Professional, Industrial and duplex, and the ABAC AB7 and ABC7 Ironman family in vertical and horizontal 80 gallon tanks with standard, Premium full feature, Quiet Power and the higher output V2 pump at 24 CFM. Rotary screw: Quincy QGS 7.5 at 26 CFM and 150 PSI, Chicago Pneumatic QRS 7.5 at 26 CFM, and the Atlas Copco GA7 VSDS variable speed at 40 to 41 CFM. Oil free scroll: Atlas Copco SF+ 6 and Quincy QOF 7.5.
Power and installation
7.5 HP is the practical ceiling for single phase. A 230 volt single phase unit draws about 35 to 40 amps and wants a 60 amp circuit and a magnetic starter; the three phase versions draw about 22 amps at 230 volt and 11 amps at 460 volt. Most units ship on an 80 gallon tank. If the compressor will run more than four hours a day, price the QGS or QRS rotary screw against the piston: lower noise, no duty cycle limit and a smaller tank requirement often make up the price difference within the first service interval.
Dryer sizing
Use a 25 to 35 CFM refrigerated air dryer for a 7.5 HP piston, or match the screw output exactly if you choose a GA7. Shops with long outdoor header runs should look at a cycling dryer for lower running cost at part load.
