These compressors deliver roughly 13 to 17 CFM, which is the classic 5 HP two stage shop compressor. It runs a two bay automotive shop, a small fabrication shop, a tire shop, or a farm shop with impact wrenches, grinders, a lift and a blow gun all pulling from the same line.
Single stage vs two stage at 15 CFM
At 5 HP the choice is between a single stage pump that tops out around 135 PSI and a two stage pump rated to 175 PSI. Two stage costs more but runs cooler, lasts longer, and the extra 40 PSI of tank storage means more usable air between cycles. Almost every unit on this page is two stage with a cast iron pump. Names to know here are the ABAC Ironman and AB series, Champion R series, Quincy QT, and Chicago Pneumatic RCP.
Tank and power
Expect an 80 gallon vertical ASME tank, 230 volt single phase or 208 to 460 volt three phase motors, and a 30 amp circuit for single phase units. Vertical tanks save floor space; horizontal versions are available where ceiling height is limited. Belt drive with a flywheel is standard and keeps pump speed low.
Dryer sizing
A 5 HP compressor feeding paint work or a plasma table needs a refrigerated dryer in the 20 to 25 CFM class. Size dryers above the compressor rating to allow for high inlet temperatures in summer, and add a coalescing filter after the dryer for spray finishing.
