This page lists compressors rated roughly 28 to 32 CFM. At this output you are into 10 HP two stage piston compressors, 10 HP duplex packages built from two 5 HP pumps, 7.5 HP rotary screws, and multi pump oil free scroll units. It supports a busy six to eight bay shop, a woodworking plant, a small machine shop with CNC air blast, or a truck fleet maintenance floor.

Simplex, duplex or rotary screw

A single 10 HP piston pump on a 120 gallon tank is the simplest option. A duplex set, such as the ABAC Ironman or Champion R series duplex, mounts two pumps on one tank so one can be serviced while the other keeps the shop running, and the controller alternates the lead pump to even out wear. A 7.5 to 10 HP rotary screw from Atlas Copco, Chicago Pneumatic or Quincy is the right answer when the compressor will run all shift; it is rated for continuous duty and is 10 to 15 dB quieter than a piston unit.

Power

Most 10 HP units are three phase only, 208 to 230 or 460 volt. Single phase 10 HP is available on some duplex packages using two 5 HP motors, which is useful in shops without three phase service.

Dryer sizing

Size the refrigerated dryer at 35 to 50 CFM. For paint lines or instrument air, add a coalescing filter after the dryer and consider a desiccant dryer where a dew point below 35 degrees F is required.
