Do Not Clamp a Long Run Rigidly

Aluminum expands and contracts at 0.024 mm per metre per degree C. Over a hundred-foot straight run in a building that swings from winter mornings to summer afternoons, that movement is real and it has to go somewhere. Champion's own installation guidance is that brackets clip the tube securely to a wall or hang it from the ceiling and around beams, and that both the bracket and the tube stay adjustable.

In practice: fix the run at a sensible anchor point, then let the remaining brackets locate the pipe without pinching it, and give the system room to breathe at direction changes. A run that is bolted down hard at every point will push on its own fittings.

How far apart should the brackets go?

It depends on tube size, whether the run is horizontal or vertical, and what the structure gives you to fix to. Champion does not publish a single span table in the current literature, so rather than quote a number we would not stand behind, send us your run and we will advise. As a general principle, aluminum is light but a long unsupported span will sag visibly and that sag loads the fittings.

What is the difference between the strut bracket and the wall bracket?

The strut bracket is the general-purpose mount, sold in packs of ten, and it fastens to strut channel or directly to a surface. The wall bracket comes with a spacer that holds the pipe off the wall, is sold individually, and suits the handful of positions where you need standoff rather than a bulk run.

Can I hang the pipe from the ceiling with these?

Use the teardrop hanging bracket, which takes a 3/8 in insert and so accepts threaded rod, a Champion wire hanger or a beam clamp. The strut and wall brackets are for fixing to a surface.

Why are the strut brackets sold in tens and the wall brackets singly?

That is how Champion packages them, and it matches how they get used. A whole-shop run eats strut brackets by the dozen; wall brackets and teardrop hangers tend to be specified a few at a time for particular positions.

Do the brackets fit over the fittings as well as the tube?

They are sized to the tube outside diameter. Place brackets on tube, not on a union, elbow or tee body, and keep a bracket reasonably close to each side of a heavy fitting so its weight is not hanging on the pipe.

What does the deep wall spacer do?

It stands a strut bracket further off the wall, which is what you want on block, brick or an uneven surface, or where something else is already on the wall in the way. It is 1 x 3 x 1/2 in thick and comes with a 1/4 in x 20 x 1 in threaded rod stud.

Will these fit another brand of aluminum pipe?

Do not assume so. The clamp profile is sized to Champion's tube outside diameter. If you are extending an existing system someone else installed, send us a photo and we will identify what is on the wall.
