Morganton VES04772 60 Gallon Vertical Air Tank with Feet and Top Plate, 200 PSI

The Morganton VES04772 is a 60 gallon ASME code vertical air receiver rated for 200 PSI, with four welded feet and a top plate. This is the tank under most 3 to 5 HP vertical shop compressors, single stage and two stage alike: the pump and motor bolt to the top plate, the belt guard hangs off it, and the finished package stands on a footprint not much bigger than the tank. Buy it to rebuild a compressor whose tank has rusted through from the inside, to build a new unit from a bare pump and motor, or to replace a tank that failed a hydro test or an insurance inspection.

Sizing and fit

60 gallons suits pumps in the 10 to 18 CFM range at the usual 3 to 4 gallons of storage per CFM, which is where 3 HP two stage pumps and 5 HP single stage and two stage pumps fall. If the pump is 7.5 HP or makes more than 20 CFM, step up to the 80 gallon vertical with top plate. The 200 PSI working pressure covers 175 PSI two stage pumps with margin and 135 PSI single stage pumps easily. Before ordering a replacement, check that the top plate is long enough for the pump base and the motor slide rail you are moving over; send us the compressor model and we will confirm the plate size against the Morganton drawing. The 60 gallon horizontal with top plate is the same capacity laid flat, with a longer plate.

What to add to the tank

Receivers ship bare. Fit a safety relief valve and pressure gauge kit rated at or below the tank working pressure before it goes into service, and put a drain on the bottom port. A manual drain works if someone will open it at the end of every shift; otherwise use an electronic timer drain or a zero loss drain such as the EZ-12, which dumps condensate without venting compressed air. Pipe the drain to an oil water separator if the compressor is lubricated.

Installation and finish

Bolt the feet to the floor through vibration pads and leave 18 inches of clear space around the pump for cooling air and belt changes. If the air feeds paint guns or tools that mind water, add a refrigerated air dryer sized to the pump output. Grey primer is standard; eleven powder coat colors are listed below.
