Morganton VES04774 60 Gallon Horizontal Air Tank with Feet and Top Plate, 200 PSI

The Morganton VES04774 is a 60 gallon ASME code horizontal air receiver rated for 200 PSI, with welded feet and a top plate running along the shell. This is the layout of the classic 5 HP shop compressor: the plate is longer than the one on a vertical tank, so a pump with a wide base and a motor on a slide rail both fit with room to tension the belt, and the whole package sits low enough to live under a bench or ride on a service truck bed. Buy it to rebuild a horizontal unit whose tank is rusted or failed inspection, or to build a new 3 to 5 HP package from a bare pump and motor.

Sizing and fit

60 gallons suits pumps in the 10 to 18 CFM range at 3 to 4 gallons of storage per CFM, which covers 3 HP two stage pumps and 5 HP single stage and two stage pumps. Above 20 CFM move to the 80 gallon horizontal with top plate. The 200 PSI working pressure clears 175 PSI two stage pumps with margin. Horizontal against vertical: the horizontal tank takes more floor space but keeps the pump at a working height and gives you the longer plate; the 60 gallon vertical with top plate is the same capacity standing up. If plate size is the question, send us the compressor model and we will check it against the Morganton drawing. The 60 gallon horizontal on feet only is the plain storage version without the plate.

What to add to the tank

Receivers ship bare. Fit a safety relief valve and pressure gauge kit rated at or below the tank working pressure before it goes into service. On a horizontal tank the drain port is at the low point of the shell; fit the drain there and leave room to reach it. A manual drain works if someone opens it every shift; otherwise use an electronic timer drain or a zero loss drain such as the EZ-12, which dumps condensate without venting air. Pipe the drain to an oil water separator if the compressor is lubricated.

Installation and finish

Set the feet on vibration pads and bolt them down; on a truck bed, bolt through the deck and recheck the top plate bolts after the first week of running. Leave 18 inches of clear space around the pump for cooling air and belt changes. If the air feeds paint or tools that mind water, add a refrigerated air dryer sized to the pump output.
