Champion R-Series horizontal simplex: 2 to 30 HP two stage piston compressors on a horizontal tank
The horizontal simplex is the long tank version of Champion's R-Series: one splash lubricated two stage cast iron pump, a 1760 RPM ODP motor and a magnetic starter mounted on a horizontal ASME receiver from 30 to 240 gallons. Choose it over the vertical simplex when you have floor space but not ceiling height, when the compressor sits under a mezzanine or workbench, or when you want the pump and belt guard at waist height for service. Same pumps, same 175 PSI rating, same options; only the tank changes.
Models run from the 2 HP HR2 (4.1 CFM) through the 3 HP HR3F (8 CFM), 5 HP HR5 (17 CFM), 7.5 HP HR7F and HR7 (22.3 and 25.6 CFM), 10 HP HR10 (33.8 CFM), 15 HP HR15F and HR15 (48.7 and 54.1 CFM), 20 HP HR20 (77.8 CFM), 25 HP HR25 (90.7 CFM) and 30 HP HR30 (101.8 CFM), all at 175 PSI. The F suffix is the faster running pump that gives a lower price at the same horsepower. Match the tank to the horsepower: 30 or 60 gallon for 2 and 3 HP, 60 or 80 for 5 and 7.5, 80 or 120 for 10 and 15, 120 or 240 for 20 HP and up. Shop by size on the 2 HP, 3 HP, 5 HP, 7.5 HP, 10 HP, 15 HP, 20 HP, 25 HP and 30 HP pages, or see every 175 PSI compressor.
Power: 2 through 7.5 HP are available in 208-230 volt single phase; from 10 HP up the horizontal simplex is three phase only, 208-230 or 460 volt. A 5 HP single phase pulls about 22 amps at 230 V and wants a 30 amp circuit; a 7.5 HP single phase pulls in the high 30s and needs a 50 amp circuit, which is where most buyers switch to three phase if the building has it. Every unit includes the starter.
Options, selected in the variant list: A adds an air cooled aftercooler, which drops most of the water out before the tank and is the first thing to add if you run a dryer; O adds low oil shutdown; AO adds both. Pair the compressor with a refrigerated dryer sized to the CFM, an electronic tank drain and a filter regulator. For two pumps on one tank see the R-Series duplex; for a compressor without a tank see the base mounted R-Series; for the pump alone see the R-Series bare pump. Browse all Champion and piston air compressors. Freight shipping; a liftgate is available for addresses without a dock.
Manufacturer description
CHAMPION R-SERIES HORIZONTAL SIMPLEX AIR COMPRESSORS (Horizontal Simplex Variations)
Champion R-Series Horizontal Simplex Reciprocating Air Compressors deliver dependable, two-stage compressed air in a classic, service-friendly layout. With a single splash-lubricated R-Series pump mounted on a horizontal ASME/NB certified receiver, you get stable placement, easy component access, and a wide range of configurations for shop air or plant support.
Why the Horizontal Simplex layout works so well
The long horizontal platform makes maintenance simpler, belt service, filter changes, drains, controls, and accessory add-ons are easy to reach. That translates into less downtime for routine ownership tasks.
R-Series engineering you can feel
- Multi-finned cylinders to help run cooler
- Integral cylinder/head design aimed at reducing head-gasket failures
- Disc-type valves designed for long service and easy servicing by removing manifolds
- Tapered roller main bearings + balanced crankshaft for smooth operation
- Loadless starting so the compressor starts unloaded every time
Standard features (no fluff)
- Load-less starting via centrifugal unloader
- ASME inter-stage pressure relief valve
- ODP NEMA 1760 RPM electric motor
- 10-micron industrial grade intake filtration
- ASME / NB certified receiver + 0 to 300 PSIG tank pressure gauge
- Common single-phase and three-phase voltage options
Upgrade paths that improve air quality and uptime
- Air-cooled aftercooler, reduces up to 65% of moisture from discharged compressed air
- Refrigerated drying, cools air to roughly a 33 to 39° dew point to reduce downstream condensation
- Automatic electric tank drain, timed draining to discharge receiver moisture automatically
- Low oil-stop control, protects the unit if oil level drops
- Dual control, run start/stop or constant speed mode
- Electrical & motor upgrades, NEMA 4 starter and TEFC motor options for harsher environments
AirStation option for simplified “dry air” integration
On select horizontal simplex packages, Champion offers the AirStation concept with a mounted refrigerated dryer. It’s designed to be plug-and-play, reduce plumbing, save space, and includes a 3-way bypass valve plus a general-purpose filter.
Pressure options for real applications
R-Series packages are commonly configured for higher-pressure shop air, and an 80 PSI setting is also available across the line for dedicated low-pressure uses like climate control.
Lubrication, warranty, and support
Champion ChampLub lubricants (mineral, synthetic, food-grade) are made specifically for compressor environments. R-Series packages are backed by a strong warranty program, with optional premium coverage, and supported by a broad distributor network.
Common applications
- Automotive and fleet maintenance shops
- Industrial maintenance departments
- Fabrication and weld shops
- Packaging lines and general plant air
