25 HP air compressors: 100 to 138 CFM stationary screws and 110 CFM towables
25 HP is a plant air size. A fixed speed rotary screw makes 100 to 128 CFM at 100 to 175 PSI, and a variable speed unit tops out near 138 CFM. That supports a 20 bay truck shop, a plant running several CNC machines with air blast, a packaging line, a sandblasting booth with a 3/8 inch nozzle, or a body shop with two downdraft booths. 25 HP is also the motor size behind the 110 CFM class of towable and utility mount compressors used by contractors, so this page carries both stationary and portable machines.
What is on this page
Stationary fixed speed: Atlas Copco GA15-30 (GA22 at 105 to 128 CFM across 100, 125, 150 and 175 PSI builds), Atlas Copco G15L-22 (G22 at 92 to 110 CFM), Chicago Pneumatic QRS 25 at 100 CFM, Chicago Pneumatic CPBg 25 gear drive at 113 CFM, and Quincy QGS 25 at 125 PSI. Variable speed: Atlas Copco GA22 VSDS at 138 CFM and 175 PSI, Chicago Pneumatic CPVSd 25 at 125 CFM, and Quincy QGSV-25 at 83 CFM and 175 PSI. Portable: Chicago Pneumatic CPS 110 KD8 towable at 95 CFM and 125 PSI, Atlas Copco XAS 110 KD8 towable, and the Atlas Copco U110 utility mount for service trucks at 110 CFM. Piston: Champion ADVANTAGE 25 HP at 90 CFM and the Champion R-Series 25 HP horizontal and base mounted at 91 CFM and 175 PSI. Oil free scroll: Chicago Pneumatic COAIRE CSOF-S 25.
Choosing at 25 HP
Pressure is the first decision. The same GA22 airend makes 128 CFM at 100 PSI and 105 CFM at 175 PSI, so buy the lowest pressure build your tools will accept and pocket the difference in CFM. Fixed speed suits a plant that runs near full load all shift; variable speed pays back where demand varies, and the GA22 VSDS also gives the highest output of anything here. The 25 HP piston units are the top of the simplex piston range and only make sense where the plant already runs that family or needs 175 PSI from a machine that can sit idle for long stretches.
Power, receiver and dryer
Expect 68 amps at 230 volt three phase or 34 amps at 460 volt; most buyers at this size specify 460 volt. Use a 240 gallon receiver for fixed speed, 120 to 200 gallons for variable speed, and a 125 to 150 CFM refrigerated air dryer. Towables ship with an aftercooler option and need no receiver.
