Trench collapse and settled backfill both come from the same place: soil that never got compacted properly. A plate compactor cannot reach into a two foot trench, and a shovel handle is not compaction. That narrow, deep, awkward work is what a pneumatic tamper was built for.
These are simple tools. Picking the right one comes down to three numbers and one honest look at your compressor.
What a backfill tamper actually is
A backfill tamper is a piston hammer with a flat steel butt on the end instead of a chisel. Air drives the piston down against a long stroke, the butt slams the soil, and the tool rebounds for the next blow. Compared to a chipping hammer it hits slower and heavier, which is exactly what soil compaction wants. Fast light blows just bounce off dirt.
You will see them called backfill tampers, rammers, or pogos. Pole tampers are the same idea on a long handle for setting utility poles and working deep holes without bending over. Tie tampers are a related family built for ballast under railroad ties, with a hex shank and a much narrower working end.
The three numbers that matter
1. Air consumption, which decides everything
This is the number people skip and then regret. Backfill tampers are thirsty. Across the common models they draw roughly 18 to 42 CFM at 90 psi.

Check the spec sheet for the exact model you are buying, because two tampers that look identical can be 15 CFM apart. The working rule: a compressor rated 45 CFM or better will keep up with any single backfill tamper on the market. Below that, match the tool to what you have rather than hoping.
And be honest about your compressor's real output at 90 psi, not its advertised peak. A tamper running on air it is not getting will hit soft, wander, and take twice as long to compact the same lift.
2. Weight class
Most backfill tampers land between 30 and 42 pounds, with a 5-1/2 to 6 inch stroke. Heavier means more energy per blow and better compaction per pass, and it also means an operator who is worn out sooner. Light tampers exist for shallow work and for crews doing a lot of it. If you are compacting under a slab or backfilling around a foundation, take the weight. If you are dressing shallow trenches all day, the lighter tool will get more done.
3. Blows per minute and butt size
BPM across the class runs from around 670 up to 1,550. Slower and heavier suits cohesive soils like clay, where you want each blow to do real work. Faster suits granular fill and finishing passes. Neither is better in the abstract.
Butt size is the flat face. Six inch is the standard for trench and general backfill. Narrower butts concentrate the energy for tight work around pipe and conduit. Wider faces cover ground faster on open fill but compact less deeply per blow.
Matching the tamper to the compressor
This is the whole decision on most jobs, so here it is plainly.

The 185 CFM towable is the jobsite standard for a reason. It has the headroom for a tamper plus a breaker plus a hose run without either tool going soft. One more thing that costs people air: the hose. A tamper drawing 38 CFM through 50 feet of 1/2 inch hose is losing meaningful pressure before it ever gets to the tool. Jobsite air wants 3/4 inch or 1 inch supply hose, and the coupler at the end needs to match. Undersized hose is why two identical tampers on the same compressor perform differently.
Running one without wrecking it
- Oil it. These tools want an inline lubricator or a few drops of air tool oil in the inlet at the start of every shift. A dry tamper eats its own piston.
- Get the water out. Jobsite air is wet, and water plus a pneumatic piston equals rust and a stuck tool. A water separator at the compressor and a filter at the tool are cheap. Our water separators handle the first part.
- Compact in lifts. Six to eight inches at a time. Dumping two feet of fill and tamping the top compacts the top and nothing else, which is how trenches settle six months later.
- Let the tool work. Leaning on a tamper does not add compaction, it just tires you out and stops the rebound the tool needs to cycle properly.
- Watch the butt. A mushroomed or cracked butt is a replacement item, not a repair item. Same discipline as any other air tool steel.
Tamper or breaker?
People sometimes try to do compaction with a breaker and a clay spade. It works in a pinch and it is hard on the tool, because a breaker is built to fracture material and a tamper is built to absorb rebound off soil.
