Nobody buys a rivet buster to bust rivets anymore. The name stuck from the days when crews cut the heads off hot-driven rivets on bridges and boilers, but the tool never went away. It just changed jobs. Today it's one of the hardest-working demolition tools on any concrete crew, and if you've ever had to take down a wall or ceiling where a 90 pound breaker can't reach or can't be held, you already know why.

Here's what these tools actually are, how they differ from the chipping hammers and breakers people confuse them with, and what it takes to run one.

What a Rivet Buster Actually Is

A rivet buster is a long-stroke pneumatic percussion tool, usually 15 to 25 pounds, built around a D-handle and a heavy piston. The long stroke is the whole story. Where a chipping hammer takes fast, shallow blows, a rivet buster winds up and delivers slower, far heavier hits, around 1,000 to 1,100 blows per minute with the striking energy of a much bigger tool. Chicago Pneumatic, whose CP 4160 earned the nickname "Hell Dog" on demolition sites, describes the hitting power as equivalent to a paving breaker twice its weight. That combination, big hits in a package you can hold horizontally or overhead, is what no other tool in the lineup offers. A paving breaker only works pointed at the ground. A chipping hammer works at any angle but taps compared to this. The rivet buster fills the gap: wall demolition, elevated slabs, bridge deck repair, cutting concrete around embedded steel, and knocking down anything at chest height or above that's too stout for a chipper.

The trade is simple: longer stroke means fewer but harder blows, more tool length, and more fatigue. Crews that only buy one usually buy the 8 inch. If most of your work is overhead ceiling and beam repair, the 6 inch spares your shoulders. If you're forever fighting old reinforced foundations, the 11 inch earns its keep.

Most models also come in inside-trigger and outside-trigger versions. Outside triggers are easier to feather with gloves; inside triggers are protected from snagging. That one is personal preference.

Jumbo Shank Steel, and Why It's Different

Rivet busters don't take the .401 or .680 round shanks your chipping hammers use. They run jumbo shank steel, a tapered shank roughly .890 by 1.125 inches held by a retainer at the nose. The steel selection is its own little world: flat chisels for general breaking, moil points for starting fractures, seam cutters, backfill tampers, and sheet metal cutters for tank and hull work.

Two things to know about steel. First, buy it matched to the collar and retainer style of your tool, because jumbo shanks come in a couple of collar patterns and the wrong one won't retain. Second, dull steel wastes air and beats up the tool and the operator. A sharp moil point does more work at lower throttle than a rounded-over chisel at full song. Steel is a consumable. Treat it like one.

The Air It Takes

This is where first-time buyers get surprised. A rivet buster pulls in the neighborhood of 40 to 45 CFM at 90 psi while the trigger is down. The CP 4160, for example, is rated at 44 CFM. That's ten times what a finish nailer sips and well past what any garage compressor delivers.

In practice, that means a rivet buster is a jobsite tool fed by a tow-behind diesel compressor or a serious shop machine. A single buster runs comfortably on a small towable; the classic 185 CFM rental unit runs three or four of them. If you're trying to run one off a shop system, you want a large rotary screw compressor with receiver capacity to buffer the draw, and honest math on how much of the duty cycle the trigger is actually down.

Feed it with at least a 1/2 inch hose, and keep runs short. A long 3/8 inch hose will starve the tool, and a starved percussion tool hits soft, works slow, and pounds itself apart. A rivet buster is 15 to 25 pounds, long stroke, heavy blows, for real demolition at any angle. A paving breaker is 30 to 90 pounds, works vertically only, for slabs, footings, and pavement. Plenty of crews own all three, and each one gets reached for without much thought once you've used them.
