Champion LRS Series Variable Speed Rotary Screw Air Compressor
The Champion LRS Series is the variable speed version of Champion's 30 to 40 HP direct drive enclosed rotary screw platform. Three models cover the range: the L23RS at 30 HP, the L26RS at 35 HP and the L29RS at 40 HP. All three share one frame, one cabinet and one order entry configurator (CLRS23-29E), and all three are rated to a genuine 190 PSIG working pressure, higher than any other Champion enclosed rotary family.
What separates the LRS from the rest of the Champion variable speed line is the drive train. There are no belts, no drive guard and no belt tensioning. The TEFC motor couples directly to the airend, and an Eaton variable frequency drive with an integrated EMC filter and an internal DC bus choke is standard rather than an adder. The result is a compressor that matches output to demand continuously, starts an unlimited number of times without inrush penalty, and has one less wear item to service than a belt driven machine.
Warthog Air Compressor Store is an authorized Champion distributor. Every price on this page comes from the Champion August 2026 Rotary price book, and every unit ships new from the factory with the full Champion warranty.

Figures are Champion published data for 60 Hz units. Where a cell reads "not published" the August 2026 price book simply does not print that number for that model; we have not interpolated one. Pricing is identical for 50 Hz units, and Champion asks that you reference the technical data sheet for 50 Hz flow and pressure.

What the Configurations Mean
The LRS Series is air cooled, base mounted and three phase only. There is no AirStation or tank mounted package, no single phase option and no water cooled variant anywhere in this family. Champion prints N/A across every tank mount row for all three models. If you want a receiver mounted package in this horsepower range, look at the Champion DRS Series instead.
That leaves voltage as the only configuration choice, and on the LRS Series voltage genuinely moves the price. This is unusual: on the Champion D, DRS and L families every voltage line prints the same list price, so the choice is purely an order entry detail. On the LRS, 575V carries a real premium over 460V on all three models.
| Model | 380V | 460V | 575V | 200V / 230V / 400V |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| L23RS | not offered | available | available | not offered |
| L26RS | not offered | available | available | not offered |
| L29RS | available | available | available | not offered |
On the L29RS, Champion prices 380V and 460V identically. Both are listed here as separate selections because they are separate order entry choices and the dedicated voltage is built at the factory.
Ideal Applications
A variable speed compressor earns its premium when demand swings. If your plant air load is flat around the clock, a fixed speed machine is usually the better buy. The LRS Series is the right call when:
- Air demand varies by shift, by cell or by season, and a load/no-load machine spends real time blowing off
- You need pressure held tight. Variable speed holds a narrower band than load/no-load, which lets many plants drop system pressure a few PSI and take the energy saving twice
- You are running at the high end of the pressure range. At 190 PSIG the LRS is the only Champion enclosed rotary family rated for it
- Starts are frequent. Unlimited soft starts mean no inrush penalty and no restart timer to work around
- Floor space and noise matter. At 53 x 34.6 x 63.5 in and 72 to 73 dBA, the LRS sits on a production floor without a compressor room
- Serviceability matters. Direct drive removes belt replacement and tensioning from the PM schedule entirely
Typical homes for these machines are machine shops and CNC cells, plastics and injection moulding, food and beverage packaging, automotive service and body shops, woodworking, printing, and any laser or plasma table running sustained high pressure.
Factory-Installed Options and Adders
Priced factory options for this family are carried on a companion listing so each one can be added to an order as its own line item: Champion LRS Series Factory-Installed Options and Adders. All seven are priced identically across the L23RS, L26RS and L29RS.
- Moisture separator / trap, shipped loose
- Line reactor, external, shipped loose, 460V or 575V
- Sequencing kit, including cable, pressure sensor and assorted fittings and hardware. Order one per unit being sequenced
- RotorLub 8K and RotorLub 8K HT extended life fills
- RotorLub 4000FG-46 USDA food grade and RotorLub 4000FG-68 high temperature food grade fills
Note on the line reactor: every LRS unit already ships with an internal DC bus choke. The line reactor is an additional external device shipped loose, not a substitute for the choke, and it is specified for line side harmonic mitigation where the facility requires it.
Standard or no charge at order time
These cannot be sold as line items because they carry no price. Tell us at order time and we will configure them.
- EMC / EMI filter - standard on every LRS model at no charge
- Governor controller - standard
- RotorLub 4000 - the standard factory fill
- RotorLub 4K - an option at no charge in place of RotorLub 4000
Not available on this family
Champion prints N/A for all three LRS models on: installation kit, remote start kit, heater kit, dryer prefilter, water cooled aftercooler, tank mounted / AirStation packages, drive guard, single phase, and 200V, 230V and 400V.
Also Available by Quote
- 301VKA6032, the 10 year premium warranty kit covering all three LRS models. The August 2026 price book names the part number but prints no list price, so we quote it rather than guess. Ask for it with the compressor and we will price it with your order
Service, Accessories and What Else the Job Needs
A rotary screw compressor is the first component in a compressed air system, not the whole of it. Discharge air leaves the LRS warm and saturated, so plan on treatment:
- Refrigerated and desiccant air dryers. Champion's XCNCA non-cycling and XCCYA cycling refrigerated dryers sit naturally downstream of an LRS at these flows
- Coalescing and particulate filtration ahead of and behind the dryer
- Condensate drains and oil/water separators so condensate leaves the plant legally
- Receiver tanks. Even a variable speed machine benefits from storage; Warthog stocks Morganton and Samuel ASME receivers
- Compressed air piping, including Champion Quick-Lock and Big-Lock aluminium systems
Routine service items for this family are the spin-on air/oil separator, the spin-on oil filter, the heavy duty inlet filter and the RotorLub fluid charge. Call or email with your serial number and we will pull the correct Champion part numbers for your exact build.

Ordering Notes
- Weights are real and Champion published: 1,501 lb on the L23RS, 1,561 lb on the L26RS and 1,570 lb on the L29RS, base mount. Dimensions and weights are approximate per Champion
- SKUs on this page are Warthog internal numbers. The Champion price book prints only a Model row and a Configurator (Order Entry #) row for this family, never an orderable part number, so we have synthesised stable SKUs in the form CHL23RS-460V. Order by model and voltage and we will translate to the CLRS23-29E configurator
- Voltage is built at the factory. Tell us the voltage with your order. Champion completes voltage conversions on this platform at the factory in Sedalia, Missouri, not in the field
- These are freight items. We quote freight to your dock with the order
Why Buy From Warthog
Warthog Air Compressor Store is an authorized Champion distributor, not a drop ship marketplace listing. We read the factory price book, we build to the factory configurator, and we talk to Champion directly when a question comes up. You get a real human who knows the difference between an L29 and an L29RS, pricing straight off the current August 2026 book, and support after the machine lands. If you are not sure whether variable speed pays for itself on your load profile, call us before you buy; sometimes the honest answer is the fixed speed machine.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the LRS Series and the L Series?
Same cabinet, same footprint, same 190 PSIG rating, different drive train and control scheme. The L Series is fixed speed with a gear drive and load/no-load capacity control. The LRS Series is variable speed with a direct drive and an Eaton VFD. The LRS costs more up front and pays it back on a swinging load.
Can I get an LRS mounted on a receiver tank with a dryer?
No. Champion prints N/A on every tank mount row for the L23RS, L26RS and L29RS. If you need a packaged AirStation in this horsepower range, the DRS Series offers 120 and 240 gallon packages with and without a dryer. You can of course install an LRS beside a separate receiver tank, which is how most plants do it at this size.
Why is the 575V price higher when every other Champion rotary charges the same for any voltage?
We do not know, and we are not going to invent a reason. The August 2026 price book prints a genuine 575V premium on all three LRS models where the D, DRS and L families collapse every voltage to one price. We publish exactly what the book prints. We have asked Champion to confirm it.
Why does the sound level say "not published" for the L23RS?
Because it is. The Standard Features table on page 41 of the August 2026 Rotary book leaves the Quiet Enclosure (dBA) cell blank for the L23RS while printing 72 dBA for the L26RS and 73 dBA for the L29RS. The L23RS shares the same cabinet, so it is almost certainly in the same band, but we are not going to publish a number Champion did not print. We have asked for it in writing.
The L23RS flow table is missing the 100, 115 and 190 PSIG columns. Is it not rated for 190 PSIG?
The book publishes L23RS flow only at 110, 125 and 175 PSIG, while the L26RS and L29RS get the full 100 through 190 PSIG set. The published 190 PSIG rating for the family comes from the L26RS and L29RS columns. If you are specifying an L23RS for 190 PSIG service, call us and we will get the flow figure confirmed by the factory before you commit.
Do I need the line reactor?
Usually not. Every LRS ships with an internal DC bus choke, which handles most harmonic requirements. The external line reactor is for installations where the facility electrical spec or the utility calls for additional line side mitigation. Ask your electrical contractor, and if the answer is yes, add it from the options listing.
What is the sequencing kit for?
It lets multiple Champion compressors share a system and trade the lead, so the machines wear evenly and the system does not run more horsepower than the load needs. The kit includes the cable, the pressure sensor and the fittings and hardware, and Champion asks that one be ordered for each unit being sequenced, not one per system.
Is the lubricant naming on the price book consistent?
Not entirely. Page 40 calls the USDA food grade fluid "RotorLub 4000FG-46" while page 42 calls the same thing "RotorLub 4000FG". We have built it under the fuller 4000FG-46 name. This mirrors a similar RotorLub 8K versus RotorLub 8000 inconsistency elsewhere in the same book, and we have flagged both to Champion.
The price book mentions a tank drain and an "L22RS". Does that model exist?
No. The notes block on page 41 carries receiver mounted boilerplate, including a reference to a standard tank drain on an "L22RS", that appears to have been copied from another family. There is no L22RS anywhere in the August 2026 Rotary book, and the LRS Series has no receiver mounted configuration at all. We have raised it with Champion. It does not affect pricing on any model here.
Can I see the machine before I buy?
Call us. We will walk you through the configuration, send the factory data sheet and give you a straight answer on lead time.
