Champion L-Series Enclosed Rotary Screw Air Compressor, 30 to 40 HP
The Champion L-Series is the direct-gear-drive end of Champion's enclosed fixed-speed rotary screw line. Where the belt-driven D-Series stops at 175 PSIG, the L23, L26 and L29 carry a 190 PSIG rating, run a direct gear drive with no belts to tension or replace, and sit inside a quiet air-cooled enclosure that holds 68 to 71 dBA at the three horsepower ratings. All three share one frame, one footprint and one parts list, which makes the L-Series straightforward to specify, install and stock spares for.
Every unit arrives as a complete, fully packaged air system: radiator-type air-cooled aftercooler and oil cooler, spin-on air/oil separator, spin-on oil filter, ASME oil reservoir, heavy-duty inlet air filter, minimum-pressure discharge check valve, thermostatic mixing valve, wye-delta starter, TEFC CSA-approved motor and the Champion Governor™ microprocessor controller, all factory wired and tested. Fill is Champion RotorLub 4000.

What the Configuration Means
The L-Series is sold in one configuration only: base mounted, three phase. There is no tank-mounted AirStation package, no single-phase option and no Tri-Volt option in this family. Voltage is an order-entry choice rather than a price change: 230V, 460V and 575V all list at the same number, so the variant you buy here covers whichever of the three you specify. Tell us the voltage when you order and we pass it to the factory configurator.
Champion's price book notes that L-Series voltage conversions (460V to 230V) are completed at the Sedalia, Missouri factory, not in the field, so getting the voltage right on the order matters.
If you need a receiver tank and dryer under the compressor, the L-Series does not offer one from the factory. Two routes work: specify a Champion D-Series AirStation instead, which packages an 80, 120 or 240 gallon ASME receiver and an optional XCNC non-cycling dryer, or pair the L-Series with a separately sized receiver and a dryer from our air dryer range.
Ideal Applications
- Plants running at 175 to 190 PSIG. The L-Series is the Champion fixed-speed answer where the process genuinely needs pressure above the 175 PSIG ceiling of the belt-driven D-Series, and it still delivers 100 to 147 CFM at 190 PSIG.
- High-hour, continuous-duty service. Direct gear drive removes belt tensioning, belt wear and the drive guard entirely from the maintenance list.
- Noise-sensitive installations. At 68 to 71 dBA the enclosure is quiet enough to sit on the production floor rather than in a dedicated compressor room.
- Machine shops, fabrication, automotive and general manufacturing in the 30 to 40 HP band that want a packaged, factory-tested unit on a small 53 x 34.6 in footprint.
- Multi-compressor rooms. The sequencing kit lets L-Series units share load with each other and with other Governor-controlled Champion machines.
Service, Options and Accessories
Every priced factory-installed option for the L-Series is sold on its companion listing: Champion L-Series Factory-Installed Options. It carries the moisture separator/trap, the sequencing kit and the four alternative RotorLub lubricant fills, each at August 2026 list with Warthog pricing. Order the option alongside the compressor and we place both on one factory order so it arrives installed, not loose in a box.
No-charge order-time choices. Two items cost nothing but must be selected on the configurator when the order is placed, so tell us if you want them:
- 70°C (158°F) mixing valve in place of the standard 55°C (131°F) valve, no charge.
- RotorLub 4K in place of the standard RotorLub 4000 fill, no charge.
Not offered on the L-Series. The price book prints N/A for all of these, so they cannot be quoted: installation kit, remote start kit, inlet modulation, NEMA 4 control box, heater kit, full-voltage starter, 73°C mixing valve, dryer prefilter, electric or manual tank drain, 3-way bypass, receiver tank, California Code receiver and the 380V / 400V / Tri-Volt voltages.
Also Available by Quote. The 301KKA6032 10-year premium warranty kit covers all three models but is printed with no list price in the August 2026 book. Ask us and we will quote it with the machine. Routine consumables (RotorLub fluid, spin-on separator and oil filter elements, inlet filter) are stocked separately; call with your serial number and we will match the right part numbers.
Why Buy From Warthog
Warthog Air Compressor Store is an authorized Champion distributor. Every price on this page is built from the Champion August 2026 price book, not scraped from a competitor, and every unit ships new in the factory crate with full manufacturer warranty. We size the machine against your actual demand before you buy, we quote the receiver, dryer and piping to go with it, and we are reachable by a human when the unit needs service. If you are not sure whether the L-Series or a variable speed machine fits your load profile, call us before you order.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is the L-Series different from the D-Series? Three things. The L-Series is direct-gear driven where the D-Series in this horsepower band is belt driven; it is rated to 190 PSIG where the D-Series tops out at 175 PSIG; and it is base mount only, where the D-Series offers tank-mounted AirStation packages. The L-Series is also quieter at the same horsepower, 68 to 71 dBA against 73 to 74 dBA.
Which voltages are available? 230V, 460V and 575V, all three phase, all at the same list price. 380V, 400V and Tri-Volt are not offered on this family. Champion performs 460V to 230V conversions at the Sedalia, MO factory, so specify the voltage on the order.
Can I get it on a tank? Not from the Champion factory. The L-Series is base mount only. We will quote a separate ASME receiver and dryer sized to the machine.
Does the moisture separator come installed? No. Champion ships the L-Series moisture separator/trap loose for field installation, and it is a base-mount-only item. That is the factory's arrangement, not ours.
Why do the L26 and L29 weigh almost the same? They share a frame, an enclosure and a footprint. The published approximate weights are 1,433 lb for the L23, 1,493 lb for the L26 and 1,501 lb for the L29, and all three measure 53 x 34.6 x 63.5 in.
The spec table shows a blow-down timer on the L23 and L29 but not the L26. Is that right? That is exactly what the August 2026 price book prints: automatic blow-down timer on the L23 and L29, N/A on the L26. The three models are otherwise identical in every published respect, so we believe this is a printing slip rather than a real difference, and we have asked the factory to confirm. Call us if the blow-down function is critical to your application and we will get it in writing before you order.
Do I need the sequencing kit? Only if you are running more than one compressor. The kit includes the cable, pressure sensor and assorted fittings and hardware, and Champion specifies one kit per unit being sequenced, so a two-compressor room needs two kits.
What is the lead time? These are built to order at Sedalia, MO. Contact us for current lead time before you commit to an install date.
