Grooving: the Manual Tool and the Roll Sets

The manual grooving tool, XCBL-GT-73-168, cuts the roll groove on 73mm through 168mm aluminum pipe. It is the tool for most Big-Lock work, because most Big-Lock work is in that band.

Above 168mm the groove is cut on a powered roll groover, and the two aluminum roll sets are the tooling that goes into it: XCQL-BL-GTVE270 for a VE270 and XCQL-BL-GTVE272 for a VE272. These are the roll sets only. The grooving machine itself is not in Champion's price list. If you are installing 220mm or 273mm pipe and do not already have a powered groover, talk to us before you order anything, because hiring the machine or subcontracting the grooving is often the better answer on a single project.

The Gauge Is Not Optional

The groove tape gauge, XCBL-GTG-73-220, checks that the groove you just cut is the groove the coupling expects, across the whole 73mm to 220mm range. A groove that is shallow, wide, or off square will take a coupling and look finished, and it is the joint that lets go or weeps under load.

At $288 at list it is cheap relative to one re-done joint on a 168mm main, and the only way to actually know a groove is right rather than assume it.

Saddle Clamp Drill Bits, by Pipe Size

Each bit covers a band of pipe sizes and is required for the outlet saddle clamps on those mains.

• XCBL-SCDB-73 for 73mm mains
• XCBL-SCDB-90 for 90mm and 115mm mains
• XCBL-SCDB-168-220 for 168mm and 220mm mains

A general purpose hole saw or step bit leaves a burr and an out of round edge that the saddle gasket has to bridge. That is where saddle clamp leaks come from, and it is entirely avoidable for the price of the correct bit, which then serves every saddle on that pipe size for the life of the plant.

Sealant and Lubricant

The assembly lubricant goes on the seal and the pipe end so the seal rolls into position rather than folding. A folded seal is the usual reason a brand new grooved joint weeps. Four ounces goes a long way.

The thread sealant is for the NPT connections in the system: adapters, saddle outlets, gauge ports, drain fittings. Both are food grade, which matters in a plant where the air touches product or packaging and is no disadvantage anywhere else.

Specification note. Champion's August 2026 price list publishes description, part number and list price for the Big-Lock range and nothing else: no groove dimensions, no tool specifications, no bit diameters, no cure times or temperature ranges for the sealant and lubricant, no weights. We have not found a Big-Lock tooling datasheet. Rather than publish figures we cannot evidence, this listing states only what Champion publishes. If you need a groove specification in writing before cutting pipe, ask us and we will get it from the factory first.

Which grooving tool do I need?

For 73mm through 168mm, the manual grooving tool XCBL-GT-73-168. Above that, a powered roll groover with the matching aluminum roll set. The machine is not in Champion's price list, only the rolls, so tell us what you have and we will confirm the set.

Why is a roll set more expensive than the manual tool?

Because they do different jobs. The manual tool is a hand operated groover for mid size pipe. The roll sets are tooling for a powered machine working 8 to 12 in aluminum, which is where the money in large diameter grooving sits. On a one off large diameter job it is usually cheaper to subcontract the grooving than to buy the rolls, and we will say so.

Do the saddle clamp drill bit descriptions in the price list look wrong?

They are. In Champion's current price list XCBL-SCDB-168-220 is described as being for 73mm tubing, XCBL-SCDB-73 for 90 to 115mm, and XCBL-SCDB-90 for 168 to 220mm. The descriptions have shifted by one row. The prices track the part numbers correctly, $134, $201 and $314 ascending with pipe size, so we have built this listing to the part numbers and flagged the descriptions to Champion.

Can I cut the groove with a pipe cutter or a lathe?

No. A roll groove is a formed profile with a specific depth, width and seat, and the coupling and seal are designed around it. Cut it with the correct tool and check it with the gauge. This is the part of a grooved system where improvising shows up later as a joint that fails under load.

Is the assembly lubricant really necessary?

Yes, and it is the cheapest item on this page. Without it the seal tends to fold rather than roll as the joint closes, and a folded seal weeps from the first pressurization. Four ounces covers a lot of joints.

Will the Quick-Lock tooling work on Big-Lock pipe?

No. Quick-Lock is a push to connect system for 14mm to 63mm tube and its tooling is for cutting and deburring, not grooving. The two ranges share nothing at the tooling level.
