Replace the Seal, Not the Coupling

When a Big-Lock joint is opened for a layout change, a repair, or to add a branch, the coupling housings and bolts are reusable. The seal is not. It has been compressed onto two specific pipe ends for however long the system has run, and it has taken a set.

A standard 115mm seal is $40 at list against $412 for the complete coupling. Replacing the seal and reusing the housings is the normal and correct way to put a grooved joint back together, and it is what makes a Big-Lock system genuinely reconfigurable rather than nominally reconfigurable.

Standard or High Temperature

Standard covers cooled, dried shop air, which is nearly every joint in a distribution system. High temperature is for the run between the compressor discharge and the aftercooler, where the air has not been cooled yet.

The price difference is substantial, roughly seven times at every size, so it is worth knowing which joints genuinely need it rather than specifying high temperature across the plant. In most layouts that is a handful of joints at the compressor room end and nothing else.

What To Keep on the Shelf

One spare seal per coupling size in use, in the standard grade, is the sensible minimum. A plant with 90mm and 115mm mains carries two part numbers and about $63 of stock, and never has a line down waiting on a $23 gasket.

If the plant has high temperature joints at the compressor, add one spare in that grade too. Those are the joints most likely to need reopening, because they are the ones that run hot.

Specification note. Champion's August 2026 price list publishes description, part number and list price for the Big-Lock range and nothing else: no material, no temperature band in degrees, no pressure rating, no weights and no dimensions. We have not found a Big-Lock seal datasheet. Rather than publish figures from another manufacturer's grooved range and present them as Champion's, this listing states only what Champion publishes. If you need the temperature limit or the elastomer confirmed before you order, ask us and we will get it from the factory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a new coupling come with a seal?

Yes. The straight union couplings are supplied complete with their seal. The parts on this page are replacements.

Can I reuse the old seal if it looks fine?

We would not. A grooved seal works by being compressed into a specific position between two pipe ends, and once it has taken that set it does not seal the same way a second time. At $16 to $93 at list for the standard grades there is no case for trying.

Why is the high temperature seal so much more expensive?

It is a different elastomer and a much lower volume part. The ratio is consistent across the whole size range, roughly seven to one, which is why we read it as real rather than as a misprint. Champion publishes no figure for what temperature it is rated to, and we are not going to invent one.

Should I use assembly lubricant?

Yes, on the seal and the pipe end. It is what lets the seal roll into position rather than fold, and a folded seal is the usual cause of a joint that weeps from new. Champion's food grade assembly lubricant is in our Big-Lock installation tooling listing.

Is there a 273mm seal?

The price list shows a 273mm standard replacement seal as consult factory with no part number. Ask us and we will have it quoted.
