A saddle clamp is how you take a new branch off an existing main without cutting it apart. Drill the hole, bolt the saddle over it, and there is your outlet. Champion Big-Lock outlet reducing saddle clamps cover 73mm through 220mm mains with threaded outlets from 1/2 in to 2 in, plus grooved outlets on the two largest sizes.

You Need the Matching Drill Bit
A saddle clamp seals against a clean, correctly sized, correctly located hole in the pipe wall. Champion sells a saddle clamp drill bit for each pipe size band, and it is not optional equipment.
A hole cut with a hole saw or a step bit leaves a burr and a lip that the saddle gasket has to bridge, and that is where the leak comes from six months later. The bit is a one time purchase that serves every saddle on that size of pipe for the life of the plant.

- 90mm and 115mm mains: XCBL-SCDB-90
- 168mm and 220mm mains: XCBL-SCDB-168-220
Threaded Outlet or Grooved Outlet
The FNPT outlets, 1/2 in through 2 in, are the normal choice for a drop to a workstation, a filter regulator lubricator, a drain leg, a gauge or an instrument tap. Thread straight into them.
The grooved outlets on the 168mm and 220mm saddles, 73mm through 115mm, are a different thing entirely: they let you take a full secondary main off a plant header without a tee and without breaking the header apart. On a 220mm main, pulling a 115mm branch off a saddle clamp instead of cutting in a reduction tee is the difference between an afternoon and a shutdown.
Saddle Clamp or Reduction Tee
A reduction tee is the stronger, more permanent connection and it is what belongs in a new installation that is being built from a drawing. A saddle clamp is what belongs on an existing main that is already in the ceiling, already full of air, and already feeding production.
Both are legitimate. The mistake is using a saddle clamp on a new build because it is quicker on the bench, or cutting a main apart for a tee when a saddle would have done it live.

Specification note. Champion's August 2026 price list publishes description, part number and list price for the Big-Lock range and nothing else: no pressure rating, no temperature band, no gasket material, no bolt torque, no hole diameter, no weights and no dimensions. We have not found a Big-Lock saddle clamp datasheet. Rather than publish figures we cannot evidence, this listing states only what Champion publishes. Ask us and we will get anything further from the factory before you order.
Ideal Applications
Adding a drop to a new workstation off an existing header, taking an instrument or gauge tap, fitting a drain leg at a low point, feeding a new cell or machine from a main that is already installed, and pulling a full secondary main off a 168mm or 220mm plant header using the grooved outlets.
Building a Complete Big-Lock System
- Saddle clamp drill bits and installation tooling, required for every saddle
- Big-Lock aluminum pipe, 73mm to 273mm
- Reduction tees, the alternative where the main can be opened
- Straight union couplings for the grooved outlets
- Ball valves to isolate the new drop
- Filters, regulators and lubricators at the point of use
Ordering Notes
- All Big-Lock products and accessories are NO CANCEL / NO RETURN, per Champion's current price list.
- Freight: freight collect from Huntersville, NC 28078 or Las Vegas, NV 89113.
- Shipping weights: Champion publishes no weight for any Big-Lock fitting, so no catalog weight is carried on these variants.
- Photography: Champion publishes no photograph of the Big-Lock saddle clamps, so this listing is deliberately shown without an image rather than with a stand-in from another manufacturer's grooved range.
Why Buy from Air Compressor Store
Air Compressor Store is an authorized Champion Pneumatic distributor. Tell us the main size and what you are feeding and we will tell you which saddle, which drill bit, and whether a saddle is actually the right answer or whether the job wants a reduction tee.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I fit a saddle clamp to a live main?
No. Drilling the pipe wall means isolating and depressurizing that section first. What the saddle avoids is cutting the main apart, which is a far bigger job than an isolation. Plan the isolation, drill, fit, re-pressurize in stages.
Do I really need the Champion drill bit?
Yes. The saddle seals against the hole, and a hole cut with general purpose tooling leaves a burr and an out of round edge for the gasket to bridge. It is the single most common cause of a saddle clamp that leaks later. One bit covers every saddle on that pipe size.
What is the difference between the grooved outlet and the threaded outlet?
The threaded outlets take a pipe thread directly, for drops and taps up to 2 in. The grooved outlets on the 168mm and 220mm saddles take a Big-Lock coupling and a full run of aluminum pipe, so you can branch a 115mm secondary main off a 220mm header without opening the header.
Why is the 90mm by 1-1/2 in clamp more expensive than the 90mm by 2 in?
$173 against $135 at list. That is what Champion's current price list prints, and every other outlet ladder in the range rises with size. We have flagged it to Champion and we publish list exactly as printed rather than guessing a correction. If you are ordering the 1-1/2 in, call us and we will confirm it with the factory first.
Why do the grooved outlet descriptions look swapped?
Because in Champion's current price list they are. XCBL-SC-168-115G is described as a 90mm outlet and XCBL-SC-168-90G as a 115mm outlet. The prices track the part numbers correctly, with the larger outlet costing more, so we have built this listing to the part numbers and flagged the descriptions to Champion.
Is there a saddle for 273mm pipe?
Not in the current price list. Most of the 273mm Big-Lock range is consult factory. Ask us and we will have it quoted.
NOTE: Actual product may be different from pictured!
