Morganton VES09299 120 Gallon Vertical Air Tank, 200 PSI, Base Ring

The VES09299 is a 120 gallon vertical ASME receiver rated for 200 PSI on a welded base ring. There is no top plate, so this is a stand alone receiver: it goes beside a base mounted piston pump, a rotary screw, or an existing tank mounted unit that needs more storage, and it bolts to the floor through the ring. A vertical 120 takes about a third of the floor space of the horizontal version, which is why it is the usual choice in a crowded shop.

Sizing

For piston compressors, 3 to 4 gallons per CFM puts 120 gallons with a 30 to 40 CFM pump, which is the 7.5 to 10 HP range (see the 10 HP air compressors page). For a rotary screw, 1 to 2 gallons per CFM covers screws from about 60 to 120 CFM, or 15 to 25 HP, which is where a base mounted Quincy QGS or an Atlas Copco GA without the tank option would land. Adding a receiver to a variable speed screw lets it run at a steadier speed instead of chasing every tool.

What to add

The tank ships bare. Add a safety relief valve and gauge, a check valve on the inlet if the compressor does not have one, a shutoff on the outlet and an automatic drain on the bottom port. Feed the dryer from the tank outlet, not before it, so the tank does the first stage of water removal.

Grey primer is standard; eleven powder coat colors are listed below with part numbers. A 120 gallon tank ships by LTL freight on a pallet.
