Standard or High Temperature

The standard gasket covers the ordinary case: air downstream of an aftercooler or a dryer, at normal shop temperature. The high temperature gasket is for the places where the air has not been cooled yet.

The one that catches people out is compressor discharge before the aftercooler. Air leaving a rotary screw airend can be well over 180 F, and on a reciprocating machine higher still. If the flange is between the compressor and the aftercooler, it wants the high temperature gasket. Downstream of the cooler, standard is correct and considerably cheaper.

If you are not sure where the flange sits in the sequence, send us the layout. Getting this wrong does not fail immediately, which is the problem: a standard gasket on a hot line hardens, takes a set, and starts weeping months later.

Keep Spares, Because You Will Reopen the Joint

Every time a flanged joint comes apart for service the gasket should be replaced. It has been compressed, it has taken the shape of the flange face, and it will not seal the same way twice. At $17 to $83 at list for a standard gasket this is the cheapest insurance in the system.

The sensible stocking policy on a plant with Big-Lock flanges is one spare gasket per flange size in use, kept with the maintenance spares rather than ordered when a joint is already open and the line is down.

Champion's August 2026 price list publishes description, part number and list price for the Big-Lock range and nothing else: no material, no temperature band in degrees, no pressure rating, no weights and no dimensions. We have not found a Big-Lock gasket datasheet. Rather than publish figures from another manufacturer's grooved range and present them as Champion's, this listing states only what Champion publishes. If you need the actual temperature limit in writing before you order, ask us and we will get it from the factory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the flange kits already include a gasket?

Yes. The SF and HF stainless flange kits are supplied with a gasket and bolts. The gaskets on this page are for replacement, for spares, and for the second and subsequent times a joint is opened.

Can I reuse a gasket?

We would not. It has already taken a compression set against that particular flange face. Replace it whenever the joint comes apart. The part costs less than the labour of going back to a weeping flange.

What temperature does the high temperature gasket actually take?

Champion publishes a standard and a high temperature option but no figure in degrees, and we have not found a datasheet that gives one. We are not going to invent a number. If the temperature limit is a design requirement rather than a preference, ask us and we will have the factory confirm it in writing before you order, which matters here because these are no-return items.

Why do the 168mm and 220mm high temperature gaskets cost so much more than the smaller ones?

Because that is what Champion's current price list prints. The standard gaskets step up sensibly across the range, $17, $19, $28, $59, $83. The high temperature versions step $31, $34, $49 and then jump to $500 and $593 at 168mm and 220mm. That is a much larger step than the pattern suggests and we have flagged it to Champion. We show list exactly as printed rather than guessing a correction. If you need either of those two parts, call us first and we will confirm the price with the factory before the order goes in.

Is there a 273mm gasket?

Not in the current price list. Most of the 273mm Big-Lock range is consult factory. Ask us and we will have it quoted.
