Valve Only or Complete Kit

The valve only option is right when the flanges are already in the line, which is the case on a retrofit where a spool is coming out, or where the valve sits between two pieces of flanged equipment.

The complete kit is right for a new installation into grooved aluminum pipe. Champion's price list describes the kit as including the valve, two threaded adapters, two stainless flanges and two couplings with bolts, which is everything between the valve body and the pipe on both sides. At 168mm and 220mm the kit is listed without adapters, matching the way the flange kits work at those sizes.

Doing it as a kit is usually the cheaper route once you price a valve, two flange kits and two couplings separately, and it removes the risk of arriving on site with a mismatched drilling.

Where Isolation Valves Belong

The rule of thumb that saves the most downtime: you should be able to isolate any single branch, and any single piece of equipment, without stopping the plant.

• At the compressor discharge, so one machine can be serviced while the other runs.
• Either side of the dryer and the filter bank, so elements can be changed on line.
• At the head of every branch off the main header.
• Either side of the receiver, so the tank can be inspected without a full shutdown.
• At the boundary of each production area, so a leak search can be done one zone at a time, which is the only way a leak survey on a large plant is ever actually finished.

Valves are cheap relative to a shutdown. A plant that gets this right can do most compressed air maintenance during production hours.

If a pressure rating or a material certificate is a requirement, ask us and we will get it from the factory before you order.

If the exact contents matter for your bill of material, ask us and we will have it confirmed before the order goes in.

Is there a high temperature version?

Champion lists high temperature butterfly valves at all five sizes as consult factory, with no list price. We will not invent one. If you need an isolation valve upstream of the aftercooler, call or email and we will have the factory quote it.

Why does the price list describe the 168mm kit as 68mm?

Because of a typographical error in Champion's current price list. The 168mm kit prints as 68mm and the 220mm kit prints as 115mm. The part numbers and the prices are internally consistent and ascend correctly with size, so we have built this listing to the part numbers rather than to the descriptions, and flagged it to Champion.

What pressure is the valve rated to?

Not published in the price list, and we have not found a Big-Lock valve datasheet. We are not going to quote a figure from a similar valve and present it as Champion's. Ask us and we will confirm with the factory, which matters here because these are no-return items.

Can I install the valve in any orientation?

Generally yes for a butterfly valve on clean, dry air, though stem horizontal is the conventional choice so that any condensate does not sit on the seat. On a line that carries liquid water, fix the drainage problem rather than working around it with valve orientation.

Is there a 273mm valve?

Not in the current price list. Most of the 273mm Big-Lock range is consult factory. Ask us and we will have it quoted.
