Valve Only or Complete Kit

The valve only option is right when the flanges are already in the line, which is the case on a retrofit where a spool is coming out, or where the valve sits between two pieces of flanged equipment.

The complete kit is right for a new installation into grooved aluminum pipe. Champion's price list describes the kit as including the valve, two threaded adapters, two stainless flanges and two couplings with bolts, which is everything between the valve body and the pipe on both sides. At 168mm and 220mm the kit is listed without adapters, matching the way the flange kits work at those sizes.

Doing it as a kit is usually the cheaper route once you price a valve, two flange kits and two couplings separately, and it removes the risk of arriving on site with a mismatched drilling.

Where Isolation Valves Belong

The rule of thumb that saves the most downtime: you should be able to isolate any single branch, and any single piece of equipment, without stopping the plant.

• At the compressor discharge, so one machine can be serviced while the other runs.
• Either side of the dryer and the filter bank, so elements can be changed on line.
• At the head of every branch off the main header.
• Either side of the receiver, so the tank can be inspected without a full shutdown.
• At the boundary of each production area, so a leak search can be done one zone at a time, which is the only way a leak survey on a large plant is ever actually finished.

Valves are cheap relative to a shutdown. A plant that gets this right can do most compressed air maintenance during production hours.

Specification note. Champion's August 2026 price list publishes description, part number and list price for the Big-Lock range and nothing else: no pressure rating, no temperature band, no body or disc material, no Cv, no handle or actuator type, no weights and no dimensions. We have not found a Big-Lock valve datasheet. Rather than publish figures from another manufacturer's grooved butterfly range and present them as Champion's, this listing states only what Champion publishes. If a pressure rating or a material certificate is a requirement, ask us and we will get it from the factory before you order.

Branch isolation off a plant header, compressor and dryer isolation for on line servicing, zone isolation for leak surveys, receiver tank isolation, equipment changeouts, and phased installations where sections are commissioned one at a time.

A note on the price book descriptions. Champion's current price list prints the 168mm complete kit as 68mm and the 220mm complete kit as 115mm. The part numbers and the prices are internally consistent and ascend correctly with size, so this listing is built to the part numbers rather than to the printed descriptions, and the error has been flagged to Champion.
