Quincy QCMD heatless desiccant dryer: minus 40°F air from 4 to 690 CFM

Buy a desiccant dryer when a refrigerated dryer's 38°F dew point is not dry enough: compressed air lines that run outdoors or through an unheated building in winter, paint and powder coating booths, CNC spindles and air bearings, laser cutter assist air, instrument and control air, and any process where a drop of water ruins the part. The QCMD is Quincy's modular heatless unit, which means twin towers of ceramic desiccant blocks, one drying while the other regenerates with a slice of the dry air, no heater and no external power beyond a 115 volt plug for the controller.

Sizing: the models are rated at 100 PSIG and 100°F inlet. Pick the QCMD with a rating at or above the compressor's delivered CFM, then remember that a heatless dryer uses about 16 percent of its rated flow as purge air. A 25 HP screw making 100 CFM wants the QCMD 110 and leaves roughly 92 CFM for the tools; if that is not enough, buy the next size up or add the dew point demand control (standard on the QCMD) which cuts purge when the load is light. Inlet coalescing filters are included and mounted; a particulate afterfilter is not required because the ceramic blocks do not dust. Connections run from 1/2 inch push to connect on the smallest units to 2 inch NPT on the QCMD 535 and 690.

Install it after the receiver and after a refrigerated dryer if you already own one (the refrigerated dryer takes out most of the water for free and the desiccant does the last step). Plumb the filter drains to a floor drain or an oil water separator. Pair it with a Quincy QGS rotary screw or QT Pro piston compressor, and keep a QCF 0.01 micron coalescing filter element on the shelf.
