The Champion XC Series is Champion Pneumatic's X-Series inline compressed air filter line: sixteen housing sizes from 18 to 1,354 SCFM, each available in four filtration grades. A die-cast aluminum housing rated to 250 PSIG, a smooth-bore flow insert that directs air into the element and minimizes turbulence and pressure loss, and a dual indicator that reads both differential pressure and operating efficiency make the XC the filter Champion specifies on its own X-Series dryers.

Four Filtration Grades, One Housing Family

Every XC housing of a given size shares the same body, connections and footprint. The grade determines the element inside, the ISO 8573-1 air quality you get out, and the drain that ships with it.

A correctly built train runs GP first, then the dryer, then HE, and AC last if the process cannot tolerate oil vapor. DP is the dust after-filter that protects the plant from desiccant carryover.

How to Read an XC Part Number

The part number is the grade, the flow rating, then the drain: XC + GP / HE / AC / DP + flow in SCFM + FD (float drain) or M (manual drain). XCGP235FD is a 235 SCFM general purpose filter with a float drain. XCAC353M is a 353 SCFM activated carbon filter with a manual drain. Replacement elements drop the drain code and add E, so XCGP235FD takes an XCGP235E element.

Champion supplies XC filters ship-loose with its X-Series dryers. If you are replacing the filters that came with a dryer, this chart tells you which housing you have.

On the heated desiccant machines, the XCHP and XCHBA, the mounted pre-filter elements are XCHE235E, XCHE288E, XCHE353E, XCHE589E, XCHE1077E and XCHE1354E by model size.

Ideal Applications

Rotary screw and reciprocating compressor discharge filtration, refrigerated and desiccant dryer protection, paint and powder coating feed lines, laser cutting assist gas, pneumatic instrumentation and control air, packaging machinery, laboratory air, plasma cutters, blow molding, and any plant where the cost of a contaminated production run exceeds the cost of an element. The AC grade is the right choice ahead of processes where hydrocarbon odor is a defect: food adjacent packaging, breathing air pre-treatment stages, and clean room support.

Element Replacement and Service

Replace the element annually, or when the dual indicator shows the differential pressure has climbed roughly 5 PSID above its clean condition, whichever comes first. A clogged element is not free: every PSID of unnecessary pressure drop costs about one half of one percent of the compressor's energy, and a saturated coalescing element will eventually re-entrain the oil it collected straight into your plant air. Activated carbon elements are the exception. They give no differential pressure warning because they adsorb vapor rather than trap particles, so they run on a strict calendar, typically every six to twelve months depending on inlet temperature.

The current Champion price list prints a figure for each that is out of line with every neighboring size in the same table, so rather than publish a number we do not trust, we confirm those three with the factory before quoting. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I size an XC filter?

Size to the actual SCFM passing that point in the piping, not to compressor horsepower, and not to the pipe size you happen to have. When you land between two sizes, go up. An oversized filter runs at a lower pressure drop, the element lasts longer, and the energy penalty disappears.

Do I need both a GP and an HE filter?

If you have an oil-flooded rotary screw and any downstream process more sensitive than a sandblaster, yes. GP takes the bulk load so the HE element is not overwhelmed, and running HE alone means buying expensive coalescing elements far more often than you need to.

Which grade goes after a desiccant dryer?

DP. Desiccant beds shed fines, and a 1 micron dust after-filter keeps that abrasive material out of your valves and tools. GP or HE downstream of a desiccant tower is the wrong tool and will load up quickly.

Does the activated carbon grade remove water?

No. AC removes oil vapor and hydrocarbon odor only. It must be installed downstream of a dryer and downstream of an HE coalescing filter, or liquid water will destroy the carbon bed in weeks.

What is the difference between the XC Series and the CFL Series?

Both are Champion inline filters. The CFL Series is the cast-aluminum modular and pressure-vessel line rated to 300 PSIG with slide or gauge indicators and several drain and indicator options. The XC Series is the X-Series line rated to 250 PSIG with a dual indicator standard, and it is what Champion mounts on and ships with its X-Series dryers. If you are matching an existing X-Series dryer, stay with XC.
