Why You Cannot Drain Compressed Air Condensate to the Sewer

Every compressor, aftercooler, receiver tank, filter and refrigerated dryer in a plant produces condensate, and that condensate carries lubricant carried over from the compression chamber. A single 100 HP rotary screw can drop 20 gallons or more of oily water per day in humid weather. Discharging that to a municipal sewer or a storm drain violates the Clean Water Act and most local pretreatment ordinances, and hauling it away as regulated waste costs hundreds of dollars a drum. An oil/water separator removes the lubricant on site, leaving water you can legally drain and a small volume of concentrated oil you dispose of once or twice a year.

How the Four-Stage EnviroChamp 2 Works

1. Expansion and sediment chamber - Incoming condensate is depressurized and slowed so rust, pipe scale and sediment settle out before they can foul the carbon. The chamber lifts out for cleaning.
2. Separation filter - Coalesces small oil droplets into larger ones so they float free to the surface and gravity-drain to the oil collection container.
3. Pre-adsorption element - Breaks contaminant-formed emulsions that gravity alone will not release, so the carbon bed sees a much lighter oil load.
4. Activated carbon bed - A wide, deep carbon bed adsorbs the last traces of dissolved and emulsified hydrocarbon, polishing the discharge to under 15 ppm.

Lubricant Compatibility - Read This Before You Buy

The EnviroChamp 2 is a gravity separator. It only works if the lubricant in your compressor will release from water, which means it must be a fully demulsible fluid. Champion specifies RotorLub 4000, RotorLub 4000 FG and RotorLub 8000; PAO and POE based fluids from other manufacturers generally work as well. It is not suitable for emulsifying lubricants such as polyglycol, ATF, or motor oils carrying heavy additive packages, because those hold oil in suspension and will pass straight through to the carbon bed and blind it prematurely. If you are unsure what is in your sump, check the fluid data sheet or call us before ordering.

Sizing, Drains and the DISTRIBUTOR

Size the separator to the total air flow whose condensate reaches it, not to compressor horsepower alone. Champion recommends adding the M3550 DISTRIBUTOR whenever the demand-style drain valves feeding a unit can collectively deliver more than 43 oz on a CSP15, 64 oz on a CSP30, or 96 oz on a CSP60. A large demand drain dumps its whole charge in a second or two, and that surge stirs the carbon bed and shortens its life. The DISTRIBUTOR collects the surge and feeds it in evenly. On CSP120, CSP180 and CSP240 the DISTRIBUTOR is included, because its second job is splitting flow evenly across the manifolded vessels.

Service and Element Replacement

The EnviroChamp 2 is maintained on condition rather than on a fixed calendar. Change the carbon when the sample jar comparison shows cloudy water against clean tap water, or when the pop-up flow indicator trips. Drain the oil container whenever it fills. The easiest way to service a unit is with the matching CSP replacement filter kit, which bundles the expansion chamber element, separation filter, pre-adsorption filter and carbon for one model into a single part number. Individual replacement elements are also stocked if you only need one stage. In cold climates, add the M3554 or M3555 heater so the vessel cannot freeze in an unheated compressor room.

Can I legally drain the water that comes out of this?

In most jurisdictions yes, but the limit is set locally. A properly maintained EnviroChamp 2 discharges under 15 ppm of residual oil, which is inside the typical municipal pretreatment limit. Check your specific permit, and use the sample valve to document compliance.

Does it need power or compressed air?

No. It is a gravity device with no moving parts and consumes neither electricity nor compressed air. The only electrical option is the freeze-protection heater.

How do I know when to change the carbon?

Draw a sample from the sample valve and hold it next to a jar of tap water. Clear means the carbon is still working. Cloudy means order a replacement. The valve draws from two thirds of the way down the carbon depth, which gives you lead time to get the part in before the discharge goes out of limit. What happens if I use the wrong lubricant?

An emulsifying lubricant such as polyglycol or ATF keeps oil suspended in the water instead of letting it float. The gravity stages cannot release it, the carbon bed takes the full load, and it blinds quickly. Use a fully demulsible fluid.

Why does my model come with a DISTRIBUTOR?
