Service Interval: Change on Time, Not on Pressure
An activated carbon element is the one filter in the CFL family that you must not manage by differential pressure. An adsorption bed saturates long before it restricts flow, so the gauge stays low and steady right up to the moment the element stops working. Replace a Grade G element every 6 to 12 months depending on inlet oil loading and duty, and immediately if odor returns at the point of use. The nose is a better instrument than the gauge here: if you can smell oil downstream, the bed is spent.
Protect the Element You Just Paid For
Carbon is destroyed by liquid. Oil aerosol reaching the bed blinds the adsorption sites in days rather than months, and liquid water does the same. Every Grade G element needs a working Grade E or Grade F coalescing filter and a dryer ahead of it. If a carbon element failed early, check the coalescing element upstream before replacing the carbon again.

How do I know when to change it?
On a calendar, at 6 to 12 months, and immediately if odor comes back at the point of use. Do not wait for a pressure drop reading, because it will not come.
Can I regenerate an activated carbon element?
Not in the field. Industrial carbon regeneration requires high temperature in a controlled furnace. Replace the element.
My new carbon element smelled fine for a week then went bad. Why?
Almost certainly oil carryover from a failed or missing coalescing prefilter. Fix the upstream stage first, otherwise you will keep buying carbon elements.
Do I need to depressurize before changing an element?
Always. Isolate the filter, bleed it to zero pressure, and confirm at the drain before opening the bowl.
