The Champion CFL Series Grade G is an activated carbon oil vapor and odor removal filter available in ten flow rates from 20 to 780 SCFM. Where a coalescing filter captures liquid oil aerosol, the Grade G adsorbs what is left in the gas phase, taking oil vapor and hydrocarbon odor down to .003 ppm at a particle rating of 0.01 micron. It is the last stage in a treatment train and the only one that addresses smell and taste.

Why a Coalescing Filter Cannot Do This Job
Lubricant that passes a rotary screw airend does not all leave as droplets. A measurable fraction vaporizes at compression temperature and stays a gas the whole way downstream, invisible to any mechanical filter. That vapor is what you smell at the nozzle, what taints a food product, what leaves a haze on a painted panel, and what shows up as hydrocarbon in a breathing air test. Removing it takes adsorption, not filtration, which means a bed of activated carbon. The Grade G packs that bed into the same modular CFL housing as the rest of the family, so it drops into an existing filter stack.
Performance
- Oil Vapor and Odor Removal — Down to .003 ppm remaining hydrocarbon content.
- Particle Rating — 0.01 micron.
- Mandatory Prefiltration — A carbon bed must see dry, oil-free, particulate-free air. Liquid oil will blind a carbon element in days.

The connection sizes above are the standard Champion configurations for Grade G. Each housing also accepts the larger port sizes in its range, up to 1/2" on models 20 through 60, 1" on models 100 and 170, and 1-1/4" or 1-1/2" on models 250 and 375, as well as BSP threads. A differential pressure slide or gauge, a liquid level indicator on models 375 and below, and an electronic demand drain are all order-entry options. Call us and we will configure the part number.
Key Features at a Glance
- Activated Carbon Adsorption — Removes what no mechanical filter can touch.
- .003 PPM Remaining Oil Vapor — Eliminates hydrocarbon odor and taste.
- 0.01 Micron Particle Rating — Also traps the carbon fines the bed itself sheds.
- 20 to 780 SCFM Rated Flow — Ten sizes from a single paint booth to a plant header.
- 300 PSIG Maximum Working Pressure — 250 PSIG when supplied with an automatic drain or liquid level indicator.
- 150°F Maximum Inlet Temperature — Adsorption efficiency improves as inlet temperature drops, so cooler is better.
- Same Modular Housing — Bolts to the rest of the CFL family with a standard connector kit.
- Heavy-Duty Cast Aluminum Housing — Corrosion resistant, factory pressure tested.

Ideal Applications
Paint and powder finishing where oil vapor causes fisheyes and craters, food and beverage packaging, breathing air systems, pharmaceutical processing, laboratory and analytical air, blow molding of food-grade containers, dental and medical air, and any system where operators complain that the air smells like compressor oil. It is also standard where a plant runs oil-lubricated compressors but has to certify oil-free quality at the point of use.
Build Your Filtration Train
The Grade G always goes last: (1) Grade A mechanical separator; (2) Grade C particulate filter; (3) dryer; (4) Grade E or Grade F coalescing filter; (5) Grade G activated carbon filter. Skipping step 4 is the single most common reason a carbon filter fails early.
Element Replacement and Service
Carbon elements are not judged by differential pressure, because an adsorption bed saturates long before it restricts flow. Replace the Grade G element on a time basis, typically every 6 to 12 months depending on inlet oil loading and duty, or immediately if odor returns at the point of use. That is the practical test: if you can smell oil downstream, the bed is spent no matter what the gauge says. Genuine Champion CF-series Grade G elements are listed in the chart above.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a Grade G make my air breathing-air certified?
Not by itself. A carbon filter is a required component of a breathing air package, but certification also depends on the dryer, on carbon monoxide monitoring, and on the rest of the system meeting Grade D breathing air requirements. Talk to us before you build one.
Why does my carbon filter smell like oil after only a month?
Almost always missing or spent coalescing prefiltration. Liquid oil reaching a carbon bed blinds the adsorption sites very quickly. Check the Grade E or Grade F element ahead of it first.
Is there a differential pressure indicator?
It is available as an order option, but it is not the right maintenance signal for carbon. Pressure drop stays low right up until the bed is exhausted. Change on time, not on differential.
How do I size it?
Size to the actual SCFM at that point in the system. Oversizing a carbon filter is genuinely worthwhile here, because lower face velocity means longer contact time with the bed, better adsorption, and a longer element life.
