The Champion CFL Series Grade B is a combination separator and general purpose filter available in ten flow rates from 20 to 780 SCFM. A single Grade B housing does two jobs at once: it separates bulk liquid out of the air stream and then filters what is left down to 3 micron with a residual oil carryover of 5 ppm. Rated to 300 PSIG, it is the one-filter answer for shops that want real protection on a general-purpose air system without stacking two separate housings.

Two Stages in One Housing

Air entering a Grade B first hits a separation section that throws out condensate slugs and heavy droplets, then passes through a pleated depth element that captures solid particles and coalesces the remaining oil aerosol. That two-stage arrangement is why the Grade B lasts so much longer than a bare coalescing element installed on wet air, and why it is the standard choice ahead of pneumatic tools, cylinders, and regulators in general plant service. Where you need instrument-quality air, follow it with a Grade E high-efficiency coalescing filter.

Model Selection Chart

Models 20 through 60 ship with an internal automatic drain and a differential pressure slide indicator. Models 100 and 170 ship with an internal automatic drain and a differential pressure gauge. Models 250 through 780 ship with a gauge and a manual or plugged drain port; an internal automatic drain or an electronic demand drain can be substituted at order entry. The Grade B suits general industrial plant air, pneumatic tool and cylinder supply, automotive service bays, woodworking and fabrication shops, packaging lines, and any point-of-use drop where a single filter has to handle both liquid and particulate. It is a strong pre-filter ahead of a refrigerated dryer on systems that run wet, because the separation section keeps condensate out of the dryer heat exchanger.

Element Replacement and Service

Replace the element annually, or whenever the differential pressure indicator shows a 5 PSID rise across the filter, whichever comes first. Running a clogged element wastes energy at roughly 1% of compressor horsepower per PSID of pressure drop and eventually risks element rupture. Frequently Asked Questions

How is a Grade B different from a Grade C?

A Grade C is a 1 micron particulate filter. A Grade B is a combination separator and filter rated at 3 micron and 5 ppm oil, so it removes bulk liquid as well as solids. Choose Grade B where the air is wet and general-purpose quality is enough; choose Grade C where the air is already dry and you want a finer particle rating.

Is a Grade B good enough for paint spraying?

No. For paint, follow the Grade B with a Grade E coalescing filter, and add a Grade G carbon filter if you are getting fisheyes from oil vapor.

How do I choose the right size?

Size to the actual SCFM flowing through that point in the system, not to compressor horsepower. An oversized housing runs at lower pressure drop and the element lasts longer, so when in doubt, size up.

Slide indicator or gauge?

The slide is a simple pop-up visual telling you the element is loaded. The gauge reads the actual differential in PSID and is easier to trend over time. Either can be specified on any size; the gauge is a $120 list adder in place of the slide.
