Samuel A10055 400 Gallon Vertical Air Receiver, 165 PSI

The Samuel A10055 is a 400 gallon ASME code vertical air receiver rated for 165 PSI, on an 8 inch base ring. It is the usual receiver behind a 25 to 40 HP rotary screw, a 15 to 25 HP two stage piston duplex, or a smaller compressor in a plant with big intermittent loads where the storage does the work the compressor cannot. Vertical on a base ring, it takes up about three square feet of floor and bolts straight to the slab.

Sizing

For a fixed speed screw, plan on 1 to 2 gallons per CFM; a variable speed screw gets by on about 1 gallon per CFM. 400 gallons therefore suits 100 to 200 CFM of screw output, which is 25 HP, 30 HP and 40 HP. Piston compressors need more storage, 3 to 4 gallons per CFM, so the same tank covers 100 to 130 CFM of two stage piston output, which is a 15 HP to 25 HP duplex.

Check the working pressure

165 PSI is the maximum allowable working pressure, which covers screw compressors at 100, 125 or 150 PSI with the relief valve set at or below 165. A two stage piston compressor that cuts out at 175 PSI needs the 400 gallon 200 PSI version (A10056X); for high pressure service there is a 300 PSI version. What to add to the tank

Receivers ship bare. Fit a safety relief valve and pressure gauge kit rated at or below the tank's working pressure before it goes into service, and put a drain on the bottom port. A manual drain works if someone will open it every shift; otherwise use an electronic timer drain or a zero loss drain such as the EZ-12, which dumps condensate without venting compressed air. Pipe the drain to an oil water separator if the compressor is lubricated.

Installation and shipping

Set the base ring on a level pad, anchor it, and keep the drain and the handhole accessible. The tank ships by LTL freight on a pallet and needs a forklift to unload and stand.
