Who the Mark MSU is for

Mark is the value brand of the Atlas Copco group, and the MSU is its belt driven, oil injected rotary screw for tire shops, body shops, dealerships, machine shops and light manufacturing that want screw compressor reliability without a compressor room. It is quiet enough to sit on the shop floor and it ships as a complete package: base mounted, or on a 60 or 120 gallon receiver, with or without an integrated refrigerated dryer.

Picking the size

Size on CFM at the pressure you need, not on horsepower. Each frame comes in two pressure versions: the 116 PSI version makes more air, the 145 PSI version holds a higher line pressure for tools and processes that need 125 PSI at the point of use. The 3 HP makes 9.8 to 13.1 CFM, the 5 HP 18.1 to 20.1, the 7.5 HP 26.1 to 29.3, the 10 HP 33.9 to 37.5, the 15 HP 45.1 to 51.9, and the larger frames step up through 60, 74, 89, 99, 113 and 133 CFM to 154.9 CFM at 40 HP. Add up the tools that run at the same time, add 25 percent, and pick the next size up. A screw runs best loaded 60 to 90 percent of the time.

Tank, dryer and power

Take the 60 gallon tank on the 3 to 10 HP sizes and the 120 gallon on 10 HP and up unless you already have a receiver, in which case buy the base mounted unit and keep at least 1 gallon of storage per CFM. The dryer included option mounts a refrigerated dryer inside the package, which saves floor space, piping and a separate drain and is the right choice for paint, tires and any air that reaches a tool. Tell us your voltage and phase when you order; MSU packages are built for several motor voltages and we confirm the match before it ships. Leave about 3 feet of clearance for cooling air, keep the room under 104 F, and keep the oil, oil filter, air filter and separator element on a service schedule.
