The Eaton ECX09 is a 32 A three-phase, non-reversing IEC magnetic motor starter from the Eaton XT series, factory-assembled in a NEMA 1 enclosure for dependable across-the-line starting and overload protection of three-phase motors. It pairs an XT IEC contactor with an adjustable electronic overload relay set for 24 to 32 A, making it a reliable motor control for air compressors, pumps, fans, and similar industrial loads.

Cover controls
This starter ships with a blank cover. There are no start/stop pushbuttons, no selector switch and no pilot lights on the enclosure. In the Eaton catalog number the ninth character sets the cover control, and an A in that position means no cover-mounted pilot devices. Photos of the ECX09 family are representative and may show a cover fitted with pushbuttons or a selector switch.
To add operator controls in the field, order the Eaton C400GK1 START/STOP pushbutton cover control kit or the C400GK3 Hand/Off/Auto selector switch kit (Type 1 enclosures, Box 2 and larger; C600M1 on the smallest Box 1 enclosures). You can also wire an external start/stop station to the coil using the included N/O auxiliary contact as the seal-in, or run 2-wire control straight off a compressor pressure switch.
Which compressor it fits
Match the starter to the motor full load amps, not the horsepower on the nameplate alone. A 10 HP three phase motor draws about 28 A at 230 V and a 20 HP motor about 27 A at 460 V, and both sit inside this starter's 24 to 32 A overload window, which is why the two variants are labelled 240 V (10 HP) and 480 V (20 HP). A 7.5 HP at 230 V or a 15 HP at 460 V draws around 21 to 22 A and belongs on the next smaller starter; a 25 HP at 460 V (about 34 A) needs the 40 A version. Check the amps on the motor plate and set the overload dial to that figure. The 10 HP and 20 HP air compressor pages list the machines this starter normally runs.
On a piston compressor the simplest control is 2-wire: the pressure switch (a Furnas 69JG is typical) switches the coil directly, so order the coil voltage that matches the line. Size the feeder and breaker from the motor amps; our wire and breaker size guide walks through it. More starters are in the starters collection.
Typical applications
Across-the-line starting and overload protection for three-phase air compressors, pumps, blowers, fans, conveyors, and general industrial machinery.
The Eaton ECX09 32 A XT-series IEC magnetic motor starter delivers factory-built motor control in a rugged NEMA 1 enclosure with an adjustable 24 to 32 A electronic overload, available with 240V or 480V coils to match your three-phase motor.
