Samuel A10053 240 Gallon Vertical Air Receiver Tank, 200 PSI, 8 Inch Base Ring
The Samuel A10053 is a 240 gallon ASME code vertical air receiver rated for 200 PSI, standing on an 8 inch base ring, with top connections for the safety valve and gauge. It is the storage tank for a 15 to 30 HP rotary screw compressor or a 20 to 25 HP duplex piston set, and the vertical shell keeps a 240 gallon receiver on a floor footprint under three feet across, which is why it is the usual choice when the compressor room is tight. Buy it for a new installation, to add storage to a screw that is short cycling, or to replace a receiver that has lost its hydro test or insurance inspection.
Sizing and fit
For a fixed speed load and unload rotary screw, plan on 3 to 5 gallons of storage per CFM, which puts 240 gallons under machines in the 50 to 80 CFM range, roughly 15 HP to 20 HP. A variable speed screw needs less, closer to 1 to 2 gallons per CFM, so the same tank serves a 25 HP or 30 HP VSD comfortably. Piston compressors want the most storage of all because they cycle on a pressure switch; a 240 gallon tank is a good match for a two stage duplex in the 35 to 70 CFM range. The 200 PSI rating covers 175 PSI two stage pistons and every 100 to 150 PSI screw with margin. If the room has the floor space and you would rather mount the compressor on the tank, the 240 gallon horizontal A10037 is the same capacity on saddle legs. For higher pressure the A10053-300 is the 300 PSI build of this tank, and the 200 gallon A10051 is one step down.
What to add to the tank
Receivers ship bare. Fit a safety relief valve and pressure gauge kit set at or below 200 PSI before the tank goes into service, and put a drain on the bottom port. On a tank this size use an electronic timer drain or a zero loss drain such as the EZ-12 rather than a manual valve, and pipe the drain to an oil water separator if the compressor is lubricated. Put the tank between the compressor and the refrigerated air dryer so the receiver takes the heat and the surge and the dryer sees a steady flow; that is the wet tank layout and it is the one that gives a dryer the easiest life.
Shipping and installation
A 240 gallon receiver ships LTL freight on a pallet, not UPS, so plan for a liftgate or a forklift at delivery and a path into the compressor room. Anchor the base ring to the slab, give the drain port clear access, and leave room above the top head for the relief valve. The tank carries an ASME data plate; ask us for the U-1A data report if your inspector needs it. Related: 200 to 240 gallon air tanks, Samuel air compressor tanks, rotary screw air compressors.
