The 5 HP RV Series is the entry point to Champion's industrial piston line and the machine most two bay garages, farm shops, cabinet shops and small fabrication shops actually need. The VRV5-8 package mounts a splash lubricated two stage pump on an 80 gallon vertical ASME receiver and runs at 175 PSI, which is what makes a 5 HP two stage worth the money over a big box 5 HP single stage: more stored air per tank, cooler pump, and a pump that is rebuilt rather than thrown away.

The one choice that matters is pump speed. The 3600 RPM version delivers 14.6 CFM and costs less. The 1800 RPM version turns the same pump half as fast, delivers 16.5 CFM, runs quieter and cooler, and will outlast the 3600 unit by a wide margin in a shop that runs it all day. Buy the 3600 for occasional use and the 1800 for anything that runs daily. The 3600 RPM pump is offered in 208/230 volt single phase only; the 1800 RPM pump comes in 208/230 single phase, 208/230 three phase and 460 three phase.

A 5 HP single phase motor at 230 volt draws in the high 20s of amps at full load, so plan a dedicated 40 to 50 amp circuit and check the motor nameplate before the electrician shows up. The mounted NEMA 1 magnetic starter is standard. Confirm voltage and phase when ordering.

Factory options: A adds an air cooled aftercooler that removes most of the water before the tank, O adds low oil stop control, AO is both. Order the aftercooler if the air feeds a dryer, paint work or anything with a long pipe run.
