This Chicago Pneumatic start capacitor provides the initial jolt of torque that gets a refrigeration compressor motor moving. It briefly boosts current to the start winding during the first moment of start-up and then disconnects, leaving the motor to run on its own.
Capacitors lose capacity as they age and eventually fail, which shows up as hard starting, humming, or repeated overload trips on the dryer's refrigeration compressor. A fresh capacitor with the correct rating brings starting back to normal.
