Packard Titan Pro Motor Start Capacitor, 110-125 VAC, Round
Packard Titan Pro round motor start capacitors rated 110-125 VAC, the standard replacement part on single-phase reciprocating air compressors, pumps and HVAC condensing units. The start capacitor is what gives a single-phase motor its breakaway torque against head pressure. It is wired in series with the start winding and dropped out of circuit by a potential or current relay, or a centrifugal switch, a second or two after the motor comes up to speed.
If your compressor hums, draws heavy current and trips the breaker without turning over, a failed start capacitor is the first thing to check.

Ratings and case sizes
- 400-480 MFD (TMJ400): 1-7/16 in. diameter x 3-3/8 in. high. Supersedes Packard PMJ400
- 540-648 MFD (TMJ540): 1-13/16 in. x 4-3/8 in. Supersedes PMJ540
- 590-708 MFD (TMJ590): 1-13/16 in. x 4-3/8 in. Supersedes PMJ590
- 645-774 MFD (TMJ645): 1-13/16 in. x 4-3/8 in. Supersedes PMJ645
- 1000-1200 MFD (TMJ1000): 2-1/16 in. x 4-3/8 in. Supersedes PMJ1000
- 1290-1548 MFD (TMJ1290): 2-1/16 in. x 4-3/8 in. Supersedes PMJ1290
Case heights exclude the terminals. Allow roughly another 1/2 in. of clearance above the can when you are fitting one into a tight terminal box.
Why start capacitors carry a MFD range
A start capacitor is specified as a range, such as 400-480 MFD, rather than a single value. That is not vagueness: electrolytic capacitors have a wide manufacturing tolerance and the value drifts over life, so the range is the specification. Run capacitors, which stay in circuit continuously, are specified as a single value with a tight tolerance instead.
Never substitute a run capacitor for a start capacitor, or the reverse. They are different constructions with different duty ratings, and getting it wrong will destroy the capacitor and can damage the motor winding. Match the MFD range and the voltage rating on the old capacitor. You may fit a capacitor with a higher voltage rating than the original, but never a lower one.
Safety
A capacitor stores charge after the power is removed. Isolate the equipment, wait, and discharge the capacitor across a resistor before touching the terminals. Replace any capacitor that is swollen, leaking or has a bulged base.
Not sure which rating you need? Send us a photo of the old capacitor or the motor nameplate and the Warthog Air Compressor Store team will match it.
