Conrader WV-1 Pneumatic Automatic Tank Drain Valve, 1/4 in NPT

The Conrader WV-1 is a pneumatically operated automatic tank drain. It needs no electricity and no timer: it works off the compressor's own air, so the condensate comes out of the tank on its own and nobody has to remember to do it.

That last part is the whole point. Manual drains only work when someone kneels down and opens them every day, and on most machines that stops happening within a month of installation. The tank then rusts from the inside, water carries through to the tools, and the receiver quietly becomes a liability.

Where it suits

It is a good fit on reciprocating shop compressors and anywhere running power to a drain is awkward or undesirable. Because it is pneumatic rather than electric, there is no transformer, no timer to set and nothing to fail in a damp or dusty plant room.

Fitting it

Blow the tank down to zero and confirm it on the gauge before you touch the drain port. Fit the drain at the lowest point of the receiver, because a drain plumbed above the bottom of the tank leaves water sitting under it forever. Pipe the discharge to somewhere you want oily water to end up rather than onto the floor, and keep that discharge line short and the same size or larger, since restricting it is the usual reason an automatic drain stops clearing.

Use pipe thread sealant rather than tape. Tape debris on the seat of a small drain valve is exactly what makes it hang open and bleed air.
