The Champion CDV4 Series is a motorized ball valve condensate drain designed for the drain points that defeat ordinary solenoid drains: high pressure systems, heavy rust and sludge loading, and outdoor installations. Instead of a small solenoid orifice, the CDV4 uses an electric actuator to rotate a full bore ball valve open and closed, so the discharge path is the full size of the port and debris passes straight through it.

Why a Motorized Ball Valve

Solenoid drains fail in dirty service for one reason: the seat orifice is small, and rust scale, carbon and pipe sludge eventually wedge it open or hold it shut. A drain wedged open bleeds compressed air continuously. A drain held shut floods the vessel it was meant to protect and carries liquid downstream into tools and finishes. The CDV4 sidesteps both failure modes. A quarter turn actuator swings a ball valve through its full bore on every cycle, which both clears the passage and gives debris somewhere to go.

The second reason to specify a CDV4 is pressure. Most electric drains top out near 200 PSIG. The CDV4 is rated for systems up to 600 PSIG, which puts high pressure plant air, PET blowing lines and breathing air compressor rooms squarely inside its range.

Pipe the CDV4 below the vessel it drains so condensate reaches it by gravity, and install a full port isolation valve upstream so the drain can be serviced with the system running. Run the discharge to an oil water separator rather than to a floor drain, since compressed air condensate carries lubricant and is regulated waste in most jurisdictions. Set the open time just long enough to clear the collected liquid, then extend the closed interval until the drain is discharging liquid rather than air on each cycle. Verify operation with the test button at every scheduled service.

How is this different from an electronic timer drain?

A timer drain opens a small solenoid orifice on a fixed schedule. The CDV4 rotates a full bore ball valve, so it passes debris that would plug a solenoid and it holds a far higher pressure rating. The programmable control still lets you set open and closed intervals the way a timer drain would.

What pressure can it handle?

Up to 600 PSIG, which is roughly three times the limit of a typical solenoid drain.

Does it lose compressed air when it cycles?

Yes, like any timed drain it vents some air during the open interval. Tune the open time down to the minimum that clears the condensate. If zero air loss is the priority and the condensate is clean, use the CDV1 demand drain instead.
