On an oil lubricated rotary vane vacuum pump, the exhaust stream leaves the pumping chamber carrying a fine oil aerosol. The mist eliminator collects that aerosol so the oil can drain back into the pump rather than discharge into the room.
Skipping the change interval is expensive in two ways. Oil that escapes the exhaust has to be topped up, and a loaded element raises the back pressure the pump has to work against, which costs energy and heat. Most maintenance schedules pair the mist eliminator change with an oil change so the fresh oil is not immediately contaminated by saturated media.
