Grit that gets past the inlet becomes a lapping compound. That is why intake elements are treated as a scheduled consumable on vane pumps rather than a change-on-failure item. The other reason to stay ahead of it is flow: a loaded element throttles the pump, costing vacuum and adding heat long before anything looks wrong.
