The Atlas Copco WEDA S60N is the flagship of the WEDA Sludge family — the model you reach for when the application has outgrown a standard submersible dewatering pump but isn't quite large enough to justify the L-series slurry units. It's the most-installed industrial sludge pump in North American mining and heavy civil work, and for good reason: the hydraulic envelope covers an enormous range of real-world dewatering and sludge-transfer applications.

What 420 GPM Actually Means in Practice

To put 420 gpm in perspective: a single S60N can empty an Olympic-sized swimming pool of muddy water in under three hours. It can keep up with the inflow of most construction-grade trench dewatering jobs without needing a parallel backup. And because the impeller passes 2-inch solids, it doesn't care whether that water is clean, muddy, or carrying gravel and organic debris.

The S60N is engineered for continuous-duty operation in the heaviest sludge applications:

Why the WEDA S60N, Not a Bigger Drainage Pump?

A common mistake is to upsize a drainage pump (the WEDA D-series, for example) when the application turns dirty, instead of moving to a sludge pump. Don't do that. Drainage impellers are built around hydraulic efficiency on clean water — they're more efficient than a sludge pump on the same horsepower, but they jam, abrade, and burn motors when the media turns viscous or solid-bearing. The S60N gives up 5–10% peak efficiency vs. a drainage pump at clean-water duty, but in exchange you get:

• Abrasion-resistant high-chrome cast-iron impeller and wear ring
• Cartridge-style double mechanical seal with oil-bath isolation
• Vortex impeller geometry that minimizes wear on suspended grit

Built-In WEDA+ Protection

The S60N includes the full WEDA+ protection package as standard: rotation control (won't restart in reverse after a power interruption), phase-failure protection (immediate shutdown on dropped phase), and thermal switches in every winding (independent overtemp protection on each phase). All without requiring an external control panel — the pump can run direct off a contactor with no additional protective logic.

The S60N is supported by Atlas Copco's North American dealer and service network. Service kits cover the seal cartridge, impeller and wear ring assembly, cable, and motor end-cap rebuild.
