The cage is the carrier that holds the valve disc and spring and locates the assembly in the head. It is a cheap part doing a hard job: it is hit by the valve disc on every stroke, several hundred times a minute, and it sits in the hottest part of the pump. A cage with a worn or grooved seat face lets the valve leak, and a leaking valve is the usual explanation for a two-stage pump that will no longer make its rated pressure, runs hot, or pushes oil into the discharge.

Replace them in sets

Valve cages wear together. If one is worn enough to leak the others are usually close behind, and the labour to pull the head is the same whether you change one cage or four. On a four-cylinder 452 that means two of each low-pressure cage and two of each high-pressure cage. Fit new valve springs and discs and a new gasket set at the same time.
