The intercooler is the one component that makes two-stage compression worth doing. Air leaving the low-pressure cylinder is hot, and feeding hot air straight into the high-pressure cylinder costs power, raises discharge temperature and cooks the valves and oil. The intercooler drops that temperature between stages. When it blocks with carbon, splits at a joint or loses its fins to corrosion, the pump runs hot, the high-pressure valves burn out repeatedly, and the discharge temperature climbs until the oil breaks down. A pump that keeps eating HP valves almost always has a tired intercooler behind it.

The 321 takes two, and the 452 is handed

The 321 pump runs an inner and an outer intercooler, Kellogg 38325 and 38326, and both are usually replaced together. The four-cylinder 452 uses handed left and right assemblies, 48706 and 48707 as you face the flywheel, which are not interchangeable.
