Baldor motors up to 25 HP, single and three phase, in the frames and speeds that actually show up on compressors. Baldor has built motors in the United States since 1920 and is now part of ABB, and it is still the name most people ask for by part number when a compressor motor has to be replaced rather than repaired.

Why compressor duty matters here

A compressor motor starts against load, starts often, and lives in the hottest corner of the shop. A general purpose motor of the same horsepower will not always take that, and the usual symptom is a motor that trips the overload on startup or cooks a winding inside a year. Compressor duty and definite purpose motors are rated for exactly that service, which is why substituting on horsepower alone is the most common mistake we see on replacement orders.

What to match before you order

Seven things have to line up, and horsepower is only the first: horsepower, RPM, frame size, voltage and phase, shaft diameter, keyway, and enclosure. Frame and shaft decide whether it physically bolts up and drives your pump. Voltage and phase decide whether the starter and overload you already have will still protect it.

Most belt driven compressors run 1800 RPM, nominally 1725 to 1800 on the plate. 3600 RPM two-pole motors are the alternative and are not interchangeable without changing the drive, because the sheave ratio sets pump speed and pump speed sets CFM.

We stock Baldor to 25 HP. Above that, or for an open drip-proof motor going into a washdown or dusty room where it does not belong, call us before you order rather than after. We would rather talk you out of the wrong motor than process the return.
