Jobsite machines: the Atlas Copco X-Air 375-150 JD towable at 375 CFM and 150 PSI, the Atlas Copco XAS 400-150 PACE JD at 410 CFM with variable pressure control, and the Chicago Pneumatic CPS 400 KoD on a 134 HP Kohler, sold as a 400-150 unit or a 400-200 multi pressure unit that runs 100 to 200 PSI. Plant machines: the Chicago Pneumatic CPI-75 fixed speed 75 HP at 343 CFM in 100, 125, 150 and 175 PSI builds, air or water cooled, and the CPV 75 VS PM variable speed 75 HP at 387 CFM.

What 375 CFM supports

375 CFM is the standard abrasive blasting and pipeline size. It holds a 7/16 inch blast nozzle at 100 PSI, runs two 3/8 inch nozzles, or supplies a track drill and a breaker together. In a plant, 375 CFM covers 100 to 125 air stations, a large paint line, a glass or bottling plant, or a textile floor with air jet looms.

Towable or stationary

The X-Air 375, XAS 400 and CPS 400 are John Deere or Kohler diesel machines with running gear, a large fuel tank, an aftercooler and cold weather packages. The 200 PSI CPS 400-200 MP and the PACE versions cover both 100 PSI tool work and high pressure drilling from one machine. The CPI-75 and CPV 75 are stationary screws for a compressor room with 460 volt three phase service and cost far less per CFM to run over a full shift.

Fixed speed or variable speed in the plant

The CPI-75 is a fixed speed gear drive with a permanent magnet motor and comes in four pressure ratings, so buy it at the pressure you need rather than throttling a higher rated unit. The CPV 75 VS PM is variable speed and turns down to follow demand. Water cooled versions of both are available for hot rooms.

Power and installation

A 75 HP motor draws about 96 amps at 460 volt three phase or 192 amps at 230 volt. Plan on a dedicated feeder, a compressor room rated for 12 to 15 kW of rejected heat with ducted exhaust, and a receiver of 400 to 660 gallons. Towables need a level pad and hose sized for the run: 1 inch above 100 feet, 1 1/4 inch for two nozzle blasting.

Dryer sizing

Pair a stationary 375 CFM compressor with a 400 to 500 CFM refrigerated air dryer and add a desiccant dryer for instrument air or paint. On blasting jobs, order the towable with the aftercooler and water separator option and run a deliquescent or desiccant dryer ahead of the pot to keep the abrasive flowing.
