The Chicago Pneumatic COOL series holds a 45°F pressure dew point. That number is the first thing to check against your application, because it decides whether this dryer is the right one or the wrong one, and the model number will not tell you.
Where the 45°F dew point fits
For shop air, tire inflation, pneumatic tools, control systems, injection molding and most spray painting, 45°F is plenty. Condensate drops out, tools stop spitting water, rust stops forming in the drops.
If you are working to a written air quality spec, check it before you buy. ISO 8573-1:2010 Class 4 water requires a pressure dew point of +3°C, which is 37.4°F, and the COOL does not reach it. A spec that calls for Class 4 water needs a dryer rated to 38°F, such as the Quincy QPNC. We would rather tell you that here than have you find out after the crate is open.
The other limit worth knowing is inlet temperature. 131°F is the ceiling. Off a tank outlet that is never a problem. Piped straight off a compressor discharge with no aftercooler in between, it is. For hot inlet air look at the CPXHT, which takes 180°F inlet and runs a 50°F dew point.
Operating limits
| Pressure dew point | 45°F |
| Maximum inlet temperature | 131°F |
| Maximum ambient temperature | 113°F |
| Minimum ambient temperature | 41°F |
| Maximum working pressure, 15 to 125 SCFM | 232 psig |
| Maximum working pressure, 150 to 275 SCFM | 188 psig |
| Capacity rating basis | 100 psig inlet, 100°F inlet, 100°F ambient |
| Approval | cUL |
Capacities are rated at 100/100/100. Run hotter, lower, or at altitude and you get less. A fan-cooled condenser at 7,000 feet loses roughly 10 to 15 percent because thinner air carries less heat away, so size up rather than sizing to the nameplate.
What is in the cabinet
- Hot gas bypass, so the unit modulates instead of freezing the heat exchanger at light load
- Dew point indication on the front
- Integral moisture separator and condensate drain
- 115V single phase through the 100 SCFM size, 230V single phase from 125 SCFM up, so the smaller units plug into an ordinary circuit

Filtration
A dryer on its own does not give you clean air, only dry air. The standard arrangement is a FG general purpose filter ahead of the dryer to keep bulk liquid and coarse particulate off the heat exchanger, then a FC high-efficiency coalescing filter after it for the final polish. Size both at or above the dryer's rating so you are not buying back pressure drop you just paid to avoid.
