The LZL uses Atlas Copco's six-vane direct-drive motor design, with vane sealing obtained through a combination of vane air pressure and interconnecting pins, so the vanes are seated at start-up and starting torque is repeatable cycle to cycle. Here the motor drives a helical gear unit through a standard IEC interface, so the motor can be replaced in the field without disturbing gear alignment. Atlas rates the LZL for speed regulation down to 10% and torque down to 20% of maximum, set from the air supply alone.

Air consumption at maximum output is 61 l/s (129 cfm). External parts are powder coated cast iron and aluminium.
