Who the Atlas Copco GA5 to GA11 is for

The GA5, GA7 and GA11 are the 7.5, 10 and 15 HP sizes of Atlas Copco's standard industrial screw compressor. They are built for shops that run air all day: body and tire shops, machine shops, cabinet and millwork plants, dental and lab installs, bottling and packaging lines, and any plant that has outgrown a two stage piston. They run at 60 to 62 dB(A), so they sit at the point of use instead of in a compressor room, and the Elektronikon controller handles scheduling, dual pressure set points and remote monitoring over Ethernet.

Picking the frame and pressure

Each frame is sold in four fixed pressure versions, and the delivery drops as the pressure rises. The GA5 makes 31.7 CFM at 107 PSI, 27.9 at 132, 24.7 at 157 and 17.7 at 181 PSI. The GA7 makes 44.3, 42, 36.3 and 30 CFM at the same four pressures. The GA11 makes 64.1, 57, 52.5 and 46.4 CFM. Buy the 100 version if your tools need 90 PSI at the drop and your piping is sized properly; buy 125 if the plant header runs 100 to 110 PSI; buy 150 or 175 only for a process that needs it, because the GA5 175 makes almost half the air of the GA5 100 on the same motor. Add 20 to 25 percent to the sum of the tools that run together and pick the next size up.

Tank, dryer and installation

The 71 gallon tank mounted version gives storage and a single footprint; the base mounted version is for a plant that already has a receiver, with at least 1 gallon of storage per CFM. The with dryer version (Atlas Copco calls it Full Feature) builds a refrigerant dryer into the cabinet with a no loss drain and delivers roughly a 38 F pressure dew point, which removes a separate dryer, its piping and its drain from the install; take it unless you already own a dryer. Standard motors are three phase; tell us your voltage (230 or 460 V, 60 Hz) when you order. Leave about 3 feet on the service side, feed the cooling air from a space under 115 F, and plan a 1 inch discharge line with a flexible connector. Add UD+ coalescing filters for paint or instrument air and an oil water separator on the condensate drain.
