Champion CFL Series Inline Filter – High Efficiency Oil Removal 20 SCFM Grade E
The Champion CFL20E11APYTW is a Grade E high-efficiency coalescing inline filter rated at 20 SCFM, engineered to remove oil aerosols, oil vapors, and submicron particles from compressed air. Built for working pressures up to 300 PSIG, the CFL20E delivers instrument-quality air to spray booths, food and beverage lines, dental offices, laboratories, and any application where oil contamination cannot be tolerated.
Why Coalescing Filtration Matters
Even a well-maintained lubricated rotary screw compressor carries 3 to 5 milligrams of oil per cubic meter of air at discharge. Refrigerated dryers and standard particulate filters remove bulk oil, but a fine mist of submicron oil aerosols and oil vapor passes straight through to your tools, paint guns, and instruments. The result: fisheye in paint finishes, contaminated food product, sticky valves, off-spec lab tests, and rusted, gummed-up pneumatic logic. A Grade E coalescing filter is the only effective way to remove that residual oil aerosol load.
ISO 8573-1:2010 Air Quality Performance
The CFL20E delivers compressed air conforming to:
- Remaining Oil Aerosol Content: ISO 8573-1 Class 1 — ≤ 0.01 mg/m³ of oil aerosol at 20°C reference conditions.
- Solid Particles: ISO 8573-1 Class 1 — No particle larger than 0.1 micron.
- Oil Removal Efficiency: 99.999% at 0.01 micron particles.
This level of filtration meets the air-quality requirements of paint and powder-coat finishing, FDA-regulated food and beverage packaging, dental and orthodontic operatories, pharmaceutical compounding, laboratory instrument air, and ISO 8573-1 Class 1 critical-use specifications.

How Coalescing Filters Work
Inside the filter housing, compressed air flows from inside the element outward through a graduated bed of borosilicate microfibers. Microscopic oil aerosols collide with the fibers and coalesce into larger droplets that drain by gravity to the bottom of the housing, where the automatic float drain expels them. Submicron solid particles are captured by depth filtration. The result is a continuous, energy-efficient way to deliver oil-free compressed air without the cost or complexity of an oil-free compressor.

Ideal Applications for the CFL20E
Install a CFL20E wherever oil contamination would damage the product, the process, or the operator. Typical applications include automotive paint booths, custom finishing shops, powder coating, food and beverage packaging, dental operatories, orthodontic suites, medical and laboratory instrument air, pharmaceutical compounding, printing presses, and pneumatic conveying of food powders.
Where to Install
A Grade E coalescing filter is installed downstream of your air dryer. The recommended train is: compressor → aftercooler → CFL Grade C particulate pre-filter → refrigerated or desiccant dryer → CFL Grade E coalescing filter → point of use. If your application requires Class 1 or Class 0 oil-vapor air (e.g. food-direct-contact), follow the Grade E with an activated-carbon Grade A filter as well.
Element Replacement and Service
Replace the element annually or whenever the differential-pressure indicator shows a 5–7 PSID rise across the filter, whichever comes first. A saturated coalescing element loses efficiency and bypasses oil downstream—so don't ignore the indicator.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need both a Grade C and a Grade E filter?
For best results, yes. A Grade C upstream protects the Grade E element from bulk solids and water, extending its life. The Grade E then polishes the air to ISO Class 1.
Does the CFL20E remove oil vapor?
It removes oil aerosols and liquid oil down to 0.01 micron. Removing gaseous oil vapor additionally requires an activated-carbon (Grade A) filter installed downstream of the Grade E.
How often do I change the element?
Replace annually, or when differential pressure climbs 5–7 PSID above clean, whichever comes first.
