Champion VP-Series bare pumps are the splash-lubricated cast-iron pumps at the heart of the Champion Value Plus line, sold here as replacement pumps and as the starting point for a custom-built air compressor package. Three pumps cover 5 through 10 HP and 145 through 200 PSI maximum pressure. Every one is a Champion factory pump built in Princeton, Illinois, not an aftermarket copy, so it drops onto an existing Value Plus base with the same mounting pattern, the same flywheel geometry and the same service parts.
A bare pump is the right purchase in two situations: an existing VP-Series compressor has worn out its pump but still has a sound motor, tank and starter, or a builder wants to specify the motor, receiver and controls separately. Buying the pump alone is substantially cheaper than replacing the whole package and keeps the tank's ASME paperwork and installation intact.
Model selection chart

Shared technical specifications
- Lubrication: splash lubricated, no oil pump, no oil filter and no pressure feed system to fail
- Construction: cast iron cylinders and crankcase, ductile iron or cast iron flywheel acting as the cooling fan
- Valves: Champion disc valve assemblies, serviceable from the head without pulling the pump
- Intercooler: fitted on the two-stage VP-55 and VP-100; the single-stage VP-40 has none
- Drive: belt drive from a separately supplied motor; pump RPM as listed above, which is what sets the correct sheave ratio
- Duty: intermittent duty, sized for roughly a 50 to 75 percent duty cycle in normal shop service
- Supplied as: bare pump only. No motor, no belt, no sheaves, no belt guard, no base, no receiver and no controls are included
Single stage versus two stage
The VP-40 is single stage: air is compressed once and delivered at up to 145 PSI. It is the simplest and lightest of the three and suits 5 HP service where 125 PSI shop air is all that is needed.
The VP-55 and VP-100 are two stage. Air is compressed in a large low-pressure cylinder, cooled through an intercooler, then compressed again in a smaller high-pressure cylinder. Two-stage compression runs cooler, delivers more air per horsepower and reaches 180 and 200 PSI respectively. If an application needs more than about 150 PSI, or runs for long stretches, a two-stage pump is the one to specify.
Note that the VP-55 is rated for both 5 and 7.5 HP and the VP-100 for both 7.5 and 10 HP. The horsepower a given pump is driven at is set by the motor and the sheave ratio, not by the pump casting, so confirm the existing motor nameplate and sheave sizes before ordering a replacement.
Ideal applications
- Replacement pump for a worn Champion Value Plus VP5-40-6, VP5-55-8 or VP7-100-8 stationary compressor
- Automotive and truck service shops running impact tools, lifts and tire equipment
- Agricultural and equipment maintenance shops where 175 to 200 PSI is wanted for tire service
- Custom-built packages where the motor, receiver and control panel are specified separately
- OEM machine builders who need a known-quality cast-iron pump with published bore, stroke and RPM data
Service and accessories
Champion publishes a service kit for each pump, containing the oil and air filters for a routine service interval. The August 2026 Champion price book prints these part numbers without a list price, so they are quoted rather than listed:
- Z13117 VP-40 service kit (oil and air filters)
- Z13119 VP-55 service kit (oil and air filters)
- Z13121 VP-100 service kit (oil and air filters)
- CQZ12966 3 in vibration isolator set, quantity 4, for simplex and duplex models
Also available by quote: all four part numbers above. Champion lists them in the VP-Series section of the price book but publishes no list price for them, so we quote them from the factory on request rather than guess at a number.
Complete VP-Series compressor packages, with motor, ASME receiver and mounted starter already fitted, are listed separately on our Champion VP-Series Reciprocating Air Compressors page. If the old pump failed because of an undersized motor or a tank that is past its useful life, the complete package is usually the better buy.
Why buy from Warthog
Warthog Air Compressor Store is an authorised Champion distributor. These pumps ship from the Champion factory in Princeton, Illinois with full factory warranty, which an aftermarket or grey-market pump does not carry. We stock and sell the whole Champion reciprocating range, so if the pump turns out not to be the right fix we can quote the complete package, the motor, the receiver or the controls in the same conversation. Orders over 400 pounds ship freight prepaid and allowed under Champion's reciprocating shipment terms.
Frequently asked questions
Does the pump come with a motor or a belt guard?
No. A bare pump is the pump only. Motor, sheaves, belts, belt guard, base, receiver, pressure switch and all controls are supplied separately. If you need the complete machine, buy the packaged VP-Series compressor instead.
Which pump replaces the one on my VP-Series compressor?
The VP5-40-6 uses the VP-40, the VP5-55-8 uses the VP-55 and the VP7-100-8 uses the VP-100. The pump model is also stamped on the pump itself. If the nameplate is unreadable, count the cylinders: three cylinders with no intercooler is a VP-40, three cylinders with an intercooler is a VP-55 and four cylinders is a VP-100.
What oil do these pumps take?
Champion splash-lubricated reciprocating pumps take a non-detergent compressor oil. Champion's own ChampLub mineral ISO 100 is the factory fill. Do not use automotive engine oil; the detergents carry over into the air stream and attack downstream seals.
Can I run the VP-100 at 10 HP?
Yes, it is rated for 7.5 and 10 HP. The horsepower is set by the motor and the sheave ratio, so a 10 HP build needs the correct sheave combination to hold the pump at its published 500 RPM. Driving a pump above its rated RPM shortens valve and bearing life sharply.
Is a two-stage pump always better?
Not always. Two stage gives higher pressure and better air per horsepower, but it costs more and the VP-40 is perfectly matched to a straightforward 5 HP, 125 PSI shop. Specify two stage when the job needs above about 150 PSI or the compressor runs for long periods.
Are dimensional drawings available?
Champion publishes bore, stroke, cylinder count and shipping weight for these pumps, which are reproduced in full above, but the August 2026 price book carries no overall dimensional drawing. Contact us and we will request the current drawing from the factory before you commit to a mounting design.
