CPVSd Variable Speed Rotary Screw Air Compressor By Chicago Pneumatic

The Chicago Pneumatic CPVSd is a variable speed, direct drive rotary screw air compressor in 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 and 35 HP frames, delivering 43, 64, 102, 125, 140 and 164 CFM at full speed. The inverter drive slows the air end as demand drops, so the machine delivers what the shop is using instead of running loaded and unloaded at full speed. Direct drive means no belts and no gearbox between the motor and the air end. Working pressure is set at the controller anywhere from 100 to 175 PSI.

Who it is for. Shops with demand that changes through the day: body and collision shops, machine shops with CNC and air blast cleaning, cabinet shops, sign shops and small plants with uneven second shifts. If a fixed speed screw in this range spends a third or more of its time unloaded, a CPVSd of the same horsepower will cut the power bill noticeably. It also replaces pairs of 5 to 10 HP piston compressors that were doubled up to cover peaks.

Configurations. The 10 and 15 HP come base mounted or on a 120 gallon tank, in 230 V or 460 V. The 20, 25 and 30 HP come base mounted or on a 132 gallon tank, and the 35 HP base mounted only; these are 460 V. Every size is offered with or without an integrated refrigerated dryer (the D suffix in the model code). A tank mounted unit with dryer is a complete system on one skid and the usual choice for a shop installing a screw for the first time.

Install and power notes. Base mount units need a receiver; tank mounted units still benefit from a second dry receiver after the dryer in a shop with big instantaneous draws. Leave cooling clearance around the cabinet and duct the exhaust out of a small compressor room. Size the feeder for the frame horsepower at your voltage, and use a dedicated circuit; variable speed drives do not like sharing a feeder with welders. Tank mounted units ship by truck freight and need a forklift or liftgate.

What to pair it with. A refrigerated dryer if you take the no dryer version, a zero loss tank drain, a coalescing filter for paint or instrument air and an aluminum air pipe main sized for the full CFM.
