This is an equivalent mist eliminator for Becker part 965 407 00 000, the consumable element that handles oil separation on the discharge side of a rotary vane pump. Air leaving the pump carries atomized oil, and the layered media forces those droplets together until they are heavy enough to fall out of the stream.
Because the element is a wear item, its condition sets how clean the exhaust stays and how freely the pump breathes. Shops that track differential pressure across the element usually catch the change point before oil consumption or noise gives it away.
