The ABAC AS-5501TMD is a complete compressed air station on one skid: a 5 HP rotary screw air end, a 71 gallon air receiver and a refrigerated dryer, arriving mounted and plumbed as a single unit. This is the 150 PSI build, delivering 17.4 CFM and running at 63 dBA, quiet enough to sit in the work area instead of a separate compressor room. There is no separate tank or dryer to source, site and pipe, and nothing to size against each other after the fact. Choose 230V single-phase (AS-5501TMD) or 208-230-460V three-phase (AS-5503TMD); both are the same machine.

Why a screw instead of a piston
A piston compressor builds air in bursts and needs time to cool between them. A rotary screw runs, which is why shops that use air most of the day move to one. There is no duty cycle to watch, line pressure stays flat through a shift instead of sagging and recovering, and at 63 dBA this is the quietest machine in the AS-B range. The trade is that a screw dislikes short cycling, so it wants a receiver sized to its output and a demand pattern that keeps it loaded rather than starting and stopping all day. The 71 gallon tank on this build is matched to the air end for exactly that reason.
What the integrated dryer changes
Every compressor makes water. Air leaves the air end hot and saturated, and as it cools in the receiver and the shop piping that moisture drops out as liquid, carrying into tools, regulators, pneumatic controls and anything being sprayed. The refrigerated dryer on this unit chills the air and condenses that water out before it reaches the distribution piping, so what leaves the skid is dry enough for paint work, tire service and air actuated equipment. On a bare compressor you would buy a dryer separately, find floor space beside it and pipe the two together; here it is already done and already matched to the output.
How it compares
Within the 5 HP AS-B builds the choice is pressure, tank and dryer. If your tools run at normal shop pressure, the 125 PSI version of this same package trades the higher setting for more flow, 20.3 CFM instead of 17.4. If you already have dry air or do not need it, the same tank mount without the dryer is the shorter machine and the lower price. If you already own a receiver and want to keep it, the 150 PSI base mount is the same air end at 335 lbs with nothing under it. Stepping up, the 7.5 HP tank mount with dryer puts 27.1 CFM on the same 71 gallon tank at 67 dBA, which is the move when two people are on air at once.
Typical applications
Paint and finishing work, automotive service and tire bays, cabinet and woodworking shops, small production and fabrication floors, packaging and pneumatic control systems, and any operation where water in the air line is causing rejects, fisheyes or tool wear. The 150 PSI rating suits shops running tools or equipment that need line pressure above the usual 125 PSI, and the 63 dBA sound level means it can live in the shop rather than in a closet.
Setting it up
Give the cabinet clear air on the cooling side, keep it out of a hot corner, and run it on its own circuit sized to the motor nameplate. The dryer draws power alongside the compressor, so plan the circuit for the package rather than for the motor alone. Oil, oil filter and separator element are the service items, and the digital controller tracks the intervals for you. Add a filter regulator at each drop if the air feeds spray equipment. Call us with your own flow and duty cycle and we will check this machine against the demand before you pipe it in.
Part of the ABAC AS-B 5 to 20 HP screw range from the Atlas Copco group. See the full rotary screw air compressor lineup, the fixed speed screw compressors, and our air dryers.
CFM measured per ISO 1217 Annex C. Noise measured per ISO 2151:2004 using ISO 9614/2 (sound intensity method).
